Ireland is a peculiar society in the sense that it was a nineteenth century society up to about 1970 and then it almost bypassed the twentieth century.

from john mcgahern, what does it mean?

It means that we were all cavemen. It's a silly quote and lacks any real merit.

It's not a silly quote. It is a reference to Ireland being incredibly under-developed up until the '70's and being basically a third world country. Beginning in the '70's, there was a large amount of investment in Ireland leading it to prosper. This prosperity occurred at such a speed that the amount of time it took for the rest of the world to develop throughout the 20th Century didn't really apply and it just skipped through to the 21st Century.
