Very unusual iPod problem.

I have a 30GB Ipod Video. Ive had it for about 2 years, never had a problem before, been absolutley brilliant.

Yesterday i plugged my iPod into my laptop and iTunes loaded up, i then saw a screen i had never seen before:

    SETUP YOUR IPOD

    NAME: MIKEYSIPO

[] AUTOMATICALLY SYNC SONGS AND VIDEOS TO ITUNES
[] AUTOMATICALLY SYNC PHOTOS TO ITUNES

This would suggest my ipod is new and has never been plugged into a PC or laptop before.

I disconnected my iPod and found that all of my songs are gone.

I connected it again and tried to put my library back on my ipod but it just refuses to accept the songs.

I went into the screen for Ipod settings and it shows 18GB of "Other Stuff" in memory. i know for a fact that is how much i had in songs and videos. So that means, my Ipod has all the songs and movies on my ipod, it just doesnt know they are songs and movies anymore.

Also, everytime i connect or disconnect the iPod i get a horrible clicking noise coming from inside the iPod, so it must be a Hard Drive problem.

What i need to know is, how did this happen? Is there any way i can fix it?

Sounds like the file system is corrupted: you'll need to format it to make it usuable again.

If you don't have the songs backed up anywhere else, you could try a program like FileScavenger to recover them. Otherwise just format your ipod and reload the songs from your PC.

You problem is you have a corrupted iTunes database file. This can sometimes happen if the iPod isn't ejected properly, or due to a crash.
Here is a link to what you need to do, a reformat isn't necessary.

I did not have my music backed up anywhere, but i used Ipod Recover and got almost all of my songs back, i lost about 180 songs, but out of 2200 thats not too bad.

If i format my ipod i can put them back but im trying to find a method where i can get my origional songs back, so a format is a last resort.

Im gonna try the method in the link spoongibbon posted. If that fails ill just restore it guess. Either way, judging by the sounds my ipod makes when i ask it to do stuff, id say its on its last legs.

EDIT: Just tried the method in spoongibbon's link, and when i go into Ipod Control>Music it says there is nothing in any of the folders.

On a slightly different note does anyone know how to delete songs from an ipod? I had been able to do this easily on previous ipods I had but now I have an 80g ipod and have been using it on my laptop. It's filling up fast and I want to get rid of some albums but keep them on my laptop - any ideas?
