Water snails

I found some water snails about a month ago and put them in my freshwater tank where they joined some minnows and loachs.

They seem to be thriving and growing at an incredible rate. The tank is clean and shiny where they've eaten all the algae that grows on the glass and background. They've laid quite a few egg patches but the fish seem to be eating them as they keep disappearing.

They adore cucumber and can demolish an inch in a couple of days. I also throw in some holiday 'fish food in chalk' so they can get minerals for their shells.

Are there any downsides to keeping snails in your tank?
