an old pc that i used for some back ups just died on me and I dont want to make the same mistake again with the new machine im going to get
so I have a few qs on what is the best way to back up a laptop/pc and all files.

is a usb or an external hard drive better or a combination of both?

does anyone use online storage/computer cloud?

how many back up copies should you make and where should they be stored e.g should 1 copy be stored offsite?

    thanks for any help

last qs, does anyone know if data on an external hard drive is secure if the ext drive is connected to a pc at the time it crashes?

i use an external hard drive for backing up my data - i actually us a couple of external hard drives! :)

in the event you drop the HDD the data may be lost permanently (speaking from experience here!) it can be very expensive to get the data back.

it depends on how diligent you are at backing up your data but you could use a scheduled task to run regular backups for you.

what OS are you/will you be using?

online storage would be useful for images etc. but i wouldn't backup personal data on to it.

the ext. HDD should be fine regardless of the PC crashing - you may have lost data if you were transferring some across at the time.

Most people I know don't back up anything on their laptop and no matter how many times I tell them they never will.

I don't because I keep all my data on my home desktop system which is backed up and only copy data I need to and from the laptop when I use it.

I'd always recommend just backing up important stuff like, pictures, music, email and file settings to a desktop hard drive. That means organising your data on the laptop in the first place so you can find it when you backup. Email is the only tricky one but of you use something like Outlook where you can move the data file you can move that into the same folder you backup then its just a drag and drop from a folder in say My Documents to an Exernal HDD. The OS can go hang as it doesn't take long to reinstall.

I say backup to a DESKTOP type external harddrive (has its own PSU and lives on the desktop) because If you back up to a USB powered HDD your likely to carry it with you and drop it or have it stolen along with your laptop.

I have a desktop drive but i rarely plug it in. I get more wireless every day. But to that end im looking into buying a MyBook World. Plugs into your Home Network without a PC so your laptop can commit backups at any old time you arent using it, no matter where it is.
