I know this is probally a regular request but I am looking to buy a laptop and bascially I need it for work documents (Microsoft word etc). I also want it for the internet and would like to be able download and store music and keep photos, the smaller laptops dont seem to have microsoft word otherwise I would be interested in them. Anyone got any recommendations, budget is under €500, :) thanks

You could always buy home & Student 2007 or even download open office.

have a look through some reviews and get to know what you're going to be buying and decide what's best for you.

other peoples advice will only get you so far, you need to familiarise yourself with what you want and then do some research into what's going to be best for you so you don't wander into a shop blind.

spoken like someone who has never heard of the absolute nightmare that the the pc world/currys RMA process.

sorry, but i wouldn't send my worst enemy to them. you did touch on something though, dell are always a good place to start, but you DO need to have some idea what you are looking for, no matter where you go so read read read.

Man dont go down the dell road ive found there machines have a uncanny ability to break down

Asus are actually a very good brand cheap light weight and mostly respectivly speced even in there budget ranges!

oh and Personally I DESPISE:mad: Currys its a feckin boghole of a place where no one has a clue about technology!

:Dbut ive had good expearances with my local pc world their usualy very helpful and the tech guys are pure sound ....but maybe some stores are different.
and ya I do know currys and pc world are almost the same company:rolleyes:

ah its actualli good but depends who ur talkn 2.the offers are ok aswel....der will always be ''those'' people hu havnt a notion regardless of where you go....ts the same wit pc world/harvey norman jst hu depnds hu manage to end up dealing with.
as for the dell they are quite good especially for prices for the specs your getting.its the bloody vista thats prone to crash with te amount of ram it takes up.my advice to you would be to buy now with vista premium and get the free upgrade for windows 7 in october(anyone who buys a laptop after 21st of june 09 is entitled to a free upgrade for windows 7 and NOT windows basic.
the chances of laptop prices increasing when windows 7 is released is a possibility.

I'd be surprised if you got MS Office bundled in any of the lower end laptops.

I got a Dell Inspiron 1545 in PC World for €449 last Feb. Added Office 2007 Home Edition from Tesco's (cheaper than PC World). I see from the Irish Times that they have more of these in and you could honestly do worse. I use it for the same as you and it's fine - no complaints. I've been using computers since 1988 and we have 5 between two of us so I'm reasonably savvy.

PC World try to sell you all sorts of add-ons & warranties because that's where they make their money. Just keep saying no thanks and buy the computer!

Btw, this will be our 4th or 5th Dell and we've found them to be very reliable.

I've decided to buy the samsung nc 10 at argos for €329.99, I can get the microsolf word for it from a friend and will download an antivirus, if anyone can recommend a good value antivirus I'd be grateful, thanks :)

It comes with McAfee installed, but will need a subscription.

AVG is a good, free alternative.

That one only has the 3 cell battery. For an extra €20 you could get the NC10 with the 6 cell battery from Komplett

Get a refurbished laptop. You can get decent spec laptop for about 400. Then download free openoffice 3.1 which is compatible with Microsoft office. You will be happy. Spending 500 for new basic spec laptop and then 100 for microsoft office isn't best solution for basic user.
