Just wondering what size of farm is needed to give a viable income from enterprises other than Dairy. Was reading a piece the other day where a reporter suggested a return of the land commission to merge smaller holdings into larger more viable holdings. think is a fairly poor suggestion myself but with land prices dropping land may again be at an affordable price to expand. would it be possible to make a living on 100 acres

I don't think you would ever make a living off 100 acres with any of the conventional enterprises. Dairy may come good again sometime but you would need huge capital investment which cannot be justified in the current environment. You would need an off farm job to supplement your income from 100 acres.

Don't think the land commission should ever come back. It was criminal what they did to farms for many years. Practically stole the land of people
