Moving out?

Just wondering, how does moving out effect your grant status.

For example if I decided to move out mid-way through this year, would my grant next year still be based on my parents income?

    Many thanks! :D

I'm not too sure how this would work.

You could apply next summer for a "change of circumstances" and if you were able to provide proof of independent residency from October 2009 then I would I think they would reassess you as an independent. But I would contact them to confirm this.

However, if you move out after October or are unable to show proof they'd probably insist on still counting your parent's income. I dunno, it all depends on how flexible they are about the change of circumstances.

EDIT: Actually none of the above would apply to you since you are under 23. If you under 23 you are considered to be dependent on your parents even if you are not. So you can't apply as an independent applicant.

That's stupid, why 23? Surely it should be like 21,or 18. I wonder how they came to that number..??

23 is when you are considered a mature student.

Yeah I agree it is kinda stupid. But I guess the logic behind it is that in most cases school-leavers are still receiving support from their parents who may be paying for their accommodation and living expenses. So even though they aren't living at home they are still dependent on their parents.

Obviously this is very unfair for young students who genuinely are independent.
