I'm looking for an external sound card for my laptop and I don't know where to look.

I went into PC World in Jervis the other day and they had no idea as to what I was talking about.

I'm looking for a sound card I can use through USB cable.

Could anybody tell me where I can go to get one?

Peats on Parnell Street I think. Or on ebay.

I bought one off ebay works fine.

Just wondering, what is the advantage of an external/dedicated sound card?

    5.1 or 7.1 Surround Sound.

If you have an HDMI cable and the proper hookup though you should get the same effect. For movies that is. Music on the other hand.

you dont see the futility in providing a 5.1 dongle and then only giving it a stereo out?

Even for just 2.0 stereo a lot of laptops/desktops have dire onboard sound. Sometimes a simple USB sound card is much better.

I got an Edirol UA-1EX (USB interface) for my desktop earlier this year as the onboard sound was crap. I would highly recommend it, though it's about €70-80 (bought it new on eBay). If you don't want to spend that much, there are cheaper Behringer equivalents (like the UCA 202 on the site JustinOval posted) which are supposed to be good enough too (they don't do 24-bit/96kHz but I rarely use above 44kHz anyway).

i see a ridiculously low price and reviews to suggest that it actually works!
