    Folks,
If I register a business name with CRO so I can register an Irish domain name, do I still need to submit an annual return to CRO even though no trading has occured.

Business Name is just that (and its not exclusive). You are simply saying 'I want to trade under this name' - you don't have to file returns or anything like it - so register away.

blue4ever is right. You will not have to make an annual return. You need to register a name with the cro if you are trading as a sole trader under a name other than your own.

Thanks folks, but I am not trading at the moment-all I want to do is register a domain other than my own name without actually trading-do I still need to submit a return. When registered I can then register it as a trademark. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks,

To register a .com you dont need a business name to start.

To register a .ie you need to provide the domain suppliers with your Registered business number.

Business names are taking anywhere between 6-7 weeks at the moment so the domain suppliers will let you away with it until you get it.

They dont l"et you away with it"..you cant just register a .ie on the pretence you will have a RBN later on. You have to file the business name and get a receipt, you then send the receipt to the domain suppliers as proof of registration at which point they process your application.

Just been through that .ie nightmare.

Apply on line. print out form, sign it, bundle in a cheque for €20. A few ddays later you will get an email saying that that the form has been submitted. When you get that email info @ cro.ie and request a receipt (as a PDF).
The registrar will (should) accept that receipt on foot of the actual cert.

thanks folks. So I suppose the next question is when I register the name with CRO do I have to submit a return to CRO each year even though I will not be trading?

Id suggest you go have a read of a few websites as you seem confused over who deals with what.

www.cro.ie - this is the company registrations office where you register the business name and the type of business you want to trade as eg sole trader. They dont deal with returns at the end of the year trading or not, they just deal with business registrations.

www.revenue.ie - this is who deals with your tax, vat and returns annually. Their site is quite informative so id suggest you go have a read on there and you will find most of your answers regarding trading, vat limits, filing a return if necessary etc.

If you plan to register a .ie domain then you need to register a business name (RBN) with the cro and then ask them for a receipt. From there contact a hosting company and register the domain with them, google it there are loads of them based in Ireland, I would recommend Blacknight. If you are going to register the name but not trade then thats it your done you have your domain and business name sorted. If you get to the stage where you want to trade then go to the revenue website above.

A B1 is for company returns, as i stated above you are looking to register so you can get a domain and only need to register a business name for this. You can simply register the business name to get a domain and register as a sole trader if you wish if you decide you will be trading. A B1 form has absolutely nothing to do with what you are looking to do.
