I hope I'm posting this on the right forum but I am absolutely livid at the moment.

For the past few years my parents - have been given a "free membership card" to Finglas Swimming Pool. Basically they're allowed to use the facility at no charge at off peak times. Most of the older people go up first thing in the morning before 10:30 to have a swim, etc. It has been a great "making new friends" source, as most of these people are recently retired with time on their hands. It's been a great way of getting out of the house for a few hours.

Anyway this free membership will no longer be available after their current ones runs out. Does anybody know is it just the Finglas Pool who have implemented these changes or is it across the Dublin City Counil Pools.

I've just spoken to the pool and they say that it's the over 55's who are affected - but apparently pensioners can show their bus pass and gain free access.

I'm livid I didn't know about it! What qualified them for a free membership?

I can understand pensioners but these obviously were not, if anybody was allowed get it I expect a lot of newly redundant people signed up for it so ineffect there might not be any real "off peak" times.

There is already a reduced rate for the unemployed.

Not 100% sure as to why the over 55's qualified for the membership card (it cost 5 euro and entitled them to a lot of stuff discounts and the sort) but if I was to put money as to why I'd say it probably has something to do with the fact that over 55's qualify for the scheme which allows them to sell their house back to the Council, and they will give you 2/3rds of the value of your property and put you into an apartment for the rest of your life (rent would be means tested) if that makes any sense.

I think their peak hours are 3:30 onwards

If I were a betting type, I'd say its probably because DCC are short on revenue streams at the moment.

know nothing about the pool, but they recently up'd their 5 a side pitched from 50e per hour to 55e per hour!

you now also have to pay 2 weeks in advance for the pitches.

Thats a nasty one, 11 each instead of 10! I hate that in music venues, when it got to €5 a pint it was bad, but now they have you pissing about with coins.

Great news I have been informed today that it was all a big misunderstanding - basically the local DCC office "misread or were mislead by a letter sent by the big DCC" The passport for over 55's still stands.
