Laptop Power Supply Question

Following on from my search for a 90W dell charger for my Smart PC 250N laptop, I just wanted to get some advice on the problem before I go spend 50+ euro on a new charger.

It's an old machine (7 years at least). The battery has been dead now for a year or two but I only ever use it with an ac adapter anyway so I was getting along fine. The other day, it suddenly gave a low power warning and shut down. It now won't start up again even with the adapter plugged in. It kicks in for a few seconds, beeps a few times and then turns off. I'm taking this as a sign that it has no power. Am I right?

The little green light on the as adapter is ON, but I'm not sure whether that means that power is getting to the machine or not. Perhaps theres another power issue i'm missing.

To conclude, is a new adapter likely to solve the issue or could something else be the cause? I'd much rather try and get a year or two more out of this fine machine rather than shell out for a new one at the moment. It's been performing well for me for years.

    Thanks in advance,
    MrT

It kicks in for a few seconds, beeps a few times and then turns off. I'm taking this as a sign that it has no power.

This indicates a problem other than the power supply. It is an error code for troublshooting the issue. How many beeps? Long or short etc..

    Aaah!! How ingenious.

Approx 3 or 4 short beeps - although I'll have to check this out later when I'm at home.

ok, so I'm getting what sound like 4 short beeps.

I'm thinking this is a mother board issue. Am I right?

How much are we looking at to get someone to replace this? or sort out what else is wrong with it.
