video editing

    looking for a program so i can edit recordings taken from the tv
    just to take out ads and unwanted footage
    anybody have any preferred ones that they use
    or ones i should stay away from

    well I'm not into video editing so no first hand experience, but some pointers that maybe will help; I think most people are using MythTV as their open source PVR of choice, and I believe you can use it to edit & remove adverts. But it's way more than a video editor so if that's all you wanted perhaps something like Kino or Cinelerra (which looks to be quite advanced)

    Virtual Dub can cut parts out of a video. I've used it to trim down video before.
