I just did a VRT search on a Jan 2006 BMW M5 and a BMW 550i both with 40,000 miles, the VRT for a BMW M5 was €17,770 and the VRT on a BMW 550i was €26,480??? I thought the M5 would cost more than a 550i

I did a VRT check on a '06 C6 - 16 Grand STG to buy the car in the North. Revenue OMSP 60K EUR so VRT of EUR21,000  - Madness. And we are talking about a 2.7 diesel here not a 5.0L + petrol. You can't really win with some of cars.:(

Usual madness from the monkeys in Rosslare.

On a side note, is the sub 35k E60 M5 on the cards soon?

Good bit of millage for an M5 I would have thought. Not the usual run of the mill commute car, so fair play to the previous owner.
As for the VRT, it doesn't make any sence with some cars, and being told that you "can appeal" and get some money back doesn't wash with me either.
Just do it right in the first place. (VRO I mean)

So it's worth more when it is 3 years old then it could be bought for new? Hahaha :D:(

@DonJose - were you just browsing / messing or are you seriously interested in either car? If the latter, you need to get a quote on paper / email from a VRO before you buy. Good luck with that. I have never been able to get through to them on the phone and of the two emails I sent them, one was answered in about 2 weeks and the other was never answered

I'm in an appeal now, still no word after a few months, meant to be a huge backlog from talking to the girl on the phone, I do expect my money back as they did rip me off in the first place.
I don't mind bankrolling the government for a few months but if it drags past November i'll be taking it to the europe..

Good luck man. Do you mind me asking how much you are looking to get back from the VRO?
You should not have to go through this ordeal of waiting for your money. It should be instant, especially if you already paid them thousands of euro already.

I am just researching at the moment but I'm looking for a 5 seater performance car within the next 12 months and the M5 ticks all the boxes.

Well if you can afford an E60 M5, go for it. I doubt you will be disappointed :D

BTW - I can think of 2 main reasons people would buy a 550 over an M5:

    1. If you must have an automatic gearbox
    2. Budget. A second hand 550 will cost considerably less to buy than an M5 as it is less desirable, so it has depreciated relatively more than the M5, which was much more expensive in the first place. The first owner of a 550 is very likely to not have pushed to car to the limit much, unlike a first M5 owner. The second owner of a 550 is much less likely to be confronted with expensive problems. Also their is always a limit in how much an engine can take. A lazy V8 in a fairly hard driven 550 will easily last 250k miles. I wouldn't put money on a highly strung V10 in a hard driven M5 lasting much more than half that...

Any way - good luck with the search for a great saloon. Let us know how you're getting on.

Parts will also be much cheaper for the 550i as they will in many cases be similar to other E60 models whereas the M5 service parts will be M5 specific and costly.

I just did another VRT comparison on a Jan 2006 BMW M5 and a BMW 550i both with 40,000 miles. 6 months later the M5 is €16,358 and the 550i is €8,028. A M5 on autotrader plus VRT comes in at €47k and a 550i at €32k. Is the M5 worth paying an extra €15k especially if used as an everyday car.

In my opinion, yes. If you buy the 550i, you'll be driving along every day cursing yourself because you didn't buy the magnificent M5!

On another note, in 2006 I bought an NI reg 1999 BMW 318i 120bhp. It had 115,000 miles on the clock. I paid €2,500 to register it. Was I too ripped off?

never driven the 550i but i have had a few M5's for drive....

if you can afford it.... take the M5.... you will not regret the choice....
    at all....
if you take the 550i, everyday you get into the car you will have in the back of your head... this should have been a M
