UK price Vs Ireland Price

OK, I know this comes up every so often, but I just had a look at the UK Sky site vs the Ireland one and was so disgusted at the price difference that I had to post here

New offer on the Sky UK site:

Sky Sports for only GBP 9 per month when you take the HD pack and join sky or stay with sky for another year.

So - GBP 16.50 for the basic package, GBP 10 for the HD Sub and GBP 9.75 for sky sports 1 or 2 (which will get you pretty much all the Premier League Matches and Champs league etc)

All in GBP 37.25 or Euro 43.64 at todays exchange rate

On the Sky Ireland site, this same package is Euro 55.75!

How can they justify this? Has anyone emailed that Jeremy Darroch guy about this?

    It's ridiculous!

Have you bought a DVD from a shop recently? It's the same for nearly all consumer goods. The only thing I buy from shops these days is food, mostly everything thing else I buy is online from the UK.
But back to your point, I don't think there is a big enough number of people in Ireland who care or do the proper research like you did, to complain, so Sky take no notice. I heard somewhere on this board say that a new law or something to begin at the end of the year will force Sky and other companies to charge with the exchange rate in mind.
But knowing Sky, they might find a way out of it.

ya know when you are flicking through the channels on sky and you come across a channel that you don't have, and it gives you the option to add this channel at a cost of one pound sterling, or if you are in ireland, TWO EURO!! this is, i think, the starkest, most blatant and unforgivable rip off these bastards ( sorry ) have ever unleashed on us.

and yes i did complain when speaking to an operator, although it was just just to make a point, as i knew it was a complete and utter waste of time. as completely disastrous as the customer service is with NTL/UPC , if it was available where i live, i would take it over SKY any day, because i think its absolutely disgusting the way they rip us off..

also considering buying my own satellite dish

To receive Freesat you do not need a new dish. Your exsisting dish will receive it just fine, it just depends on what setup you want i.e. keep Sky and add Freesat to another room or fully remove sky.
Check out also Terrestrial sub-forum for more info on how to get Irish DTT.
I use TM 6900 Super. All Irish DTT and Freesat on one EPG, working great, pause live tv, record.. all great.About 30 decent channels or if you must watch all free channels then about 150 channels. :) On going cost - yearly price of Irish tv license.

In the UK there is no VAT on magazines, in Ireland there is 21.5% VAT
That accounts for part of the difference, so it's hardly a fair comparison.

Sky only pay 15% VAT on their Irish Subscriptions as the service is sold from the UK.

Another point is British viewers get plenty of British programmes. Irish viewers get very few Irish programmes, so perhaps they should be charging Irish viewers less, not more.
