    Hi,

Thinking of having our honeymoon in Ireland and we are interested in booking into a top end plush hotel somewhere in Ireland. Would like if theres a spa and if its in a scenic place, in North or South of Ireland. Not really interested in being in Dublin as we spend alot of time there. I know its strange for a honeymoon but we've traveled alot in the past while. have been looking at parknasilla (www.parknasilla.ie) and would like something along these lines.

    Thanks all

Try Leading Hotels of the World www.lhw.com

They only have the best of the best in there. Adare Manor is on it.

People say that Inchydonney is nice but tbh, I went there once and found it nice and then the second time I went it was run down and not great so I wouldn't go again. Carton House is a fabulous hotel (but a bit close to Dublin if you didn't want it).

What about the usual Ashford Castle, Barberstown Castle (that's v nice!), Knockranny House in Westport (I think) is meant to be lovely, also The Ice House Hotel in Ballina looks nice. Aghadoe Heights in Killarney is meant to be gorgeous, or Sheen Falls ... how about the Ritz in Wicklow or the Monart in Wexford?

    Thanks Tinkerbell,

gonna check out those places online soon. defo like a place with character but love the modern plush feel aswell. Was at Barberstown for a wedding last year, nice place, but just for a wedding really. Seeing as it will be mid december, we'd really like a place that you can lounge around both your room and maybe the lobby bar where its warm - ah can't wait for winter!

Just wanted to mention re: Monart - I'm just back from a horrendous stay there - honestly it was disgraceful!

The spa was filthy, the pool was cold and there were stains on the bed sheets. We left disgusted and we paid so much for it too! It really left a sour taste in our mouths.

The other places Tinkerbell has mentioned are fab though and another one to check out is the Cliff house hotel in waterford which was just devine I can't praise it highly enough! :)

anyone got a report on Hayfield Manor in Cork - thinking of it for special wedding anniversary in Oct. Looks nice, 5*. Disappointed to hear about Inchadoney, that was also on my potential list.

How about Adare Manor Hotel & Spa & Golf Resort in the picturesque village of Adare(go figure) in Co Limerick.

1.5hrs from the major tourist sites of Ireland such as Kerry and Coastal Clare

    http://www.adaremanor.ie

It is so private you need to pass through a security kiosk to get into the massive sprawling grounds so you will not have to bump into us proletariat when visiting.

Great suggestions and thanks for the heads-up on monart. Thinking of spending a night here www.oneperysquare.com while we're on our way down to kerry. will break up the journey nicely and the grub is meant to be top.

I liked the Ritz carlton in powerscourt. Stayed there for my birthday last year.

    Very Nice.

How about the Lough Erne Golf resort? - have heard good things about it.

Spent a really nice weekend in Lyrath in Kilkenny with my girlfriend last week. Only thing that might put me off going back was the number of small children there, which surprised me a bit. However it probably won't be as much of an issue when the schools start back.

Some friends recently spent a few days of their honeymoon in The Ice House Hotel in Ballina, Mayo and they raved about it - in a massively positive way. You can get relatively good deals for midweek stays.

I've heard that Inchydoney is becoming more affordable these days.

What about the Capella Castlemartyr in Cork? It's near the sea, so walks along wintery stormy beaches can be followed by lots of warmth and comfort.

That's the kitchen where RTE filmed their guess the celebrity chef programme. I stopped there one day for a drink and it looked lovely - by the side of a lake.

Another vote for The Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, pure chill out with the most amazing food I have ever tasted and that's before you mention the view...

Spent a few days last May in Cromleach Lodge Hotel on Lough Arrow. The location was lovely. The food was fabulous. The Spa was good too. The decor in this Hotel was beautiful

Was in Castlemartyr recently and 'tis not bad at all and they have rooms on offer for €79 pppn. It's a 10-15 minute drive from the sea though, you'll not be walking there. Could head to Inchydoney from there though, an hour-odd journey.

christ lads we'll need a seriously long honeymoon to enjoy all these places!Didn't realise the extent of places in the south west. Decided that we'll make it a bit of a hotel tour, 2 nights here and there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭paddylonglegs

oh, and in your opinion, how flexible do you think hotels will be in terms of extras or upgrades when they know its a honeymoon?ya have to be cheeky every so often

The Ice House is nice but isn't special enough. Check out Lough Eske in Donegal, get a standard room for the shower alone! Plenty of room for 2!

I stayed at thir sister hotel, the Hotel kilkenny, at the weekend, very disappointed with that as well. it looks a very posh four star hotel on the website, but the rooms were average and the food awful, but reassuringly expensive:rolleyes:

OP, when you book, make sure you tell them it is for a honeymoon, in fact i would get someone else to do it and make them go over the top in makng sure that the reservations person makes a note of it. you never know, you might get a bottle of wine and a basket of fruit for your troubles, anything is good!!

Make sure Parknasilla is taking reservations, I tried to book for Jan or March 2010 earlier this week and was told they would be closed!

Would recommend http://www.cahernane.com/ in Killarney very small old georgian hotel with lovely freestanding baths, chocs on pillows etc, have travelled a fair bit around Ireland and I reckon this is one of the top notch places for food.

Would also recommend http://www.theoldconvent.ie/ in Tipp, unfortunately haven't had the chance to try it yet but is supposed to be amazing!

    Good luck!

Yeah was on Parknasillas website and couldn't get any availability for pretty much any time of the year, and seems to be no midweek availability. Was going to ring them to find out if there was a prob with their site, or were they just not open.

The place in tipp looks nice, shame there aren't more pics though, thats always a big seller imo, especially when you want to be there for an occasion, not just a place to put your head
