Brand new Dell Inspiron 1545 problems..

    Hi all,

I ordered a Dell Laptop which arrived this day last week. Turned it on to find the charger making a very dodgy static-y type hissing noise when battery was in the laptop. Rang Dell and they sent me a replacement charger a few days later. Plugged that one in, problem is still there.

Rang Dell back and told them, they said they would send on a battery to see if this was the problem. They said it should arrive within a few days.
Then i get a call today to say that i won't recieve the battery untill the 10th of Aug.

I'm afraid to charge the battery now as I'm worried this will burn out the motherboard or harm the laptop in some way. So now i'm left with a laptop that i can't bring out and about with me, which is precisely what i purchased the laptop for.

And after forking out quite a lot of money that i can hardly afford, i'm really let down by this as i would have expected a brand spanking new laptop to be PERFECT.

Should i request a refund/replacement of the laptop or just hang in untill they sove the problem?

    Thanks, M.

Have you tried removing the battery and running it with the charger plugged in (without the battery), and see if it's still making the same noise?

Indeed, i tried that on the day i got the laptop and it does not make the noise when the battery is left out.

The thing is, i'm worried that there may be other problems with it if there's already problems this early.
I think i have a few days left to ask for replacement/refund. Should i request a replacement?

10 further days for a battery is a bit long to wait alright, especially if it will arrive after the cooling-off period.
Considering the laptop is new, I would ask for a replacement.
I recently received a 1545 with dead pixels on the screen - I called Dell who told me that a few dead pixels were within industry standards, and they wouldn't be replacing it. Because it was new, I told them I wanted to return it for a full refund (it was still within the cooling off period). They sent an engineer round the following day and replaced the screen.

    Thanks for the advice dilallio!

I'll ring them up now and ask for a replacement.
I think its very unfair that they expect me to wait that long for a replacement battery, and I'm worried in case the battery is not the problem, for all i know it could be the motherboard or something internal, and then i could be left high and dry with a lousy laptop.

And their 7 day cooling off period is far too short, considering it takes so long to get problems like these sorted!

    Thanks again for the advice,
    M.
