Hi, ive tried a search on this but didnt get a proper answer.
I have just signed up for the trial with o2. (working very well i have to say)

I know this will sound like "how long is a piece of string..." but,
I've been given a 10 gig download limit over 18months. I browse youtube, check out forums (including this one of course) and general info searching.
I don't upload anything or download whole movies.
I only use this in the evenings, 4-5 days a week.

How long do you reckon (roughly of course) will it take me to get to the download limit?
Is there a download tracker you would recomend?

You'll have no worries about reaching your monthly limit of 10gb. With what you say you'll be doing you'll only use half of that or less. DOwnload trackers aren't that reliable. I think one comes with O2 but as I said you're very very unlikely to exceed your monthly limit just doint what you said. PS 10gb is your monthly limit just in case you thought that it was to last you 18 months!

The main thing I can think of that would eat into 10 gigs is downloading movies. Avoid that and you'll be fine.:)

10Gbyte could last 2 months or 2 days.

Be warned that the service can easly get x5 slower with just a handful more customers in your area. It's not broadband.

Dont be. At least you know now. They'd be right B**tards if they gave you that limit :P

If you log into your account on o2.ie you can check your broadband usage - https://www.o2online.ie/NASApp/MyAccount/PostpaidBroadbandServlet.htm

I use the Windows network manager to connect rather than the O2 application, so its useful for me to keep track of how much I'm using. Be aware that it's usually a day or two behind though.

they baned me last year for a month. saying I was over my 10gig limit.

but after a month it should reset itself the 10 gig limit due to paying it monthly.

so still with them cause Im renting and there is a cap on the speed ever since the ban for the month.

all i was downloading was tv shows esp by esp. I know it adds up. but come on Im paying for the service by the month and its expensive

You paid for a service that has a 10G monthly limit, you used up that limit and then kept on using it. What more do you want from them?

If I had a phone with 100 minutes on it, then used up that 100 minutes, should O2 let me keep using more minutes just because I had paid for "a service"?

Sending data across a mobile network is not cheap. It's comparably far more expensive than voice and SMS data.

150 to 500 times in terms of traffic you get for the same money as voice.

SMS in fact costs them virtually nothing if it's their own network.

Why would they ban you? You're on post-pay broadband, so if you go over your 10gb cap they'll charge you 2c per MB over, like many of the other people on this forum have said. It's up to you to monitor your usage but I doubt they actually banned you unless you didn't pay your bill...

it happened last year. the broadband stopped working. I was only downloading esp by esp some tv show. rang them up they said you have gone over you 10gig limit for the month. so they banned me using it for a month. then it started back workin exactly after a month. they didnt charge me extra or anything.

They don't do it anymore. They charge you if you go over. And I think the speed cap is in your head too, probably the mast being overused like almost all cells with internet users on them ;)

Youtube can seriously eat up your download allowance too, so watch that. It's worth mentioning because most people don't realise how fast a youtube video watching session can eat up you allowance.

Do they charge you immediately if you go over by 1 kB, or is it a "fair allowance" kind of thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

To be honest I think it's a fair allowance kind of thing.

I've had nearly 2 years now, and I've only gone over twice. I went to 10.13gb in June, and 10.62gb in July and no overcharges for me yet.

I don't mean to go over my cap, June was an accident and July was downloading tonnes of xbox arcade games (Worms Armageddon 2, Castle Crashers etc). I use my sisters broadband to get the TV shows and whatnot :)

I'd say if I made a habit of this I'll start getting charged the moment I go over the 10gb. There's a few on the O2 forums who got nasty bills for €80+ for going over

I took out the O2 €19 a month contract. My first bill was for €380. No warnings that I exceeded the limit.

There is a usage calculator here that is useful for those of you who need some guidance as to how much of your allocation you use.

You were probably restricted because went well over the 10GB. You should be thankful that that's all that happened because there is no fair usage on the new plans. Once you go over the 10GB now you'll be charged.

They don't cap speed. They probably caped your usage to the 10GB.

Originally their plans were fair usage so if your on the same plan for the last 2 years your probably still on this plan.

The newer plans now all have a cap, but saying that you do have visibility of your usage and it is up to you to monitor your own usage. The newer plans are about €10 cheaper though, so if you're mostly below the 10GB i'd change to one of th newer capped plans.

It would last me about 4 hours. Thats half a HD movie.
People should boycott companies offering just 10GB per month. Its a joke.

These aren't replacements for wired home broadband connections - the emphasis is very much on browsing and not on filesharing. You may get "unlimited" usage for €30 a month, but can you use that on the train or up a mountain?

    Besides, I'm a student : I only pay €10 / 10 GB. :pac:

They don't have the capacity to give everyone unlimited usage , it is a mobile network after all.

A mobile network is not, and never was, meant for downloading vast quantities. It costs far more to route Internet data over the mobile network than it does to route calls and SMS. They're being quite generous with 10G for €20.
