I have just got confirmation that I will be photographing a concert at Marlay Park this weekend
this will be my first outdoor concert and i'm not sure how it works, has anyone photographed a concert here before? Do you shoot from the stage or is there a photo pit?

Also..what lens to bring..i'm afraid my gear might not be good enough. I have 50 1.8, 10-22 or 75-300... will all of those lenses let me down? or will it be okay? Which should I bring?

sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty nervous about this.

there will be a photo pit, you'll need the 75-300, doubt the others will be long enough, bring wellies, you'll get the first three songs in front of the stage along with another 5-10 photographers and after 3 songs the MCD person will escort you back out of the venue.

You won't be on the stage, backstage or even able to watch the rest of the show

who are you shooting for that didn't tell you any of this info? pretty tough gig to shoot if you've never shot a concert before

Thanks! I have a ticket for the show so hopefully it will be okay to stay with my gear?
I have shot plenty of concerts before, just all indoors with my nifty fifty :P

Outdoor is a whole different ball game... You'll be working with slot of zoom, limited time and different ambient lighting... Will be a challenge. Good luck

.....and the weather ! (ie. if its raining) ...nasty !

/edit: I've been to this venue a few times, and I like it, they have a good set-up!

rarely is for big shows, you'll have to go back out, leave your camera in a car or somewhere safe and then re-enter with your ticket

you will probably have to push your iso up to 1600 or 3200 as because your lens doesn't go to f2.8, you'll be possibly struggling with low light

really? seen a lot of people in the crowd with DSLR's last year. I wouldn't be interested in taking pictures for much longer than first 3 songs, i want to enjoy the show!
Might contact the promoter and just ask them to confirm that I won't be allowed stay with my gear, if thats the case I can't take photographs because i'm getting there via bus.
I shot a show in the RDS last year and the MCD guy who escorted me to/from the pit was fine with me staying so long as i kept my gear in my bag.

the last 3 or so MCD gig i've shot they haven't let me back in with my camera, only with big o2 gigs though

it didn't matter that they knew me and knew i wouldn't shoot any more, they said it was the policy. possibly depends on the band and how tight they are over photo control and then mcd just pass that on

Damn! The RDS gig (Paramore) was the biggest concert I had taken pictures at and the only time there had been someone to escort me to/from the pit, maybe I just got lucky.

I will call them tomorrow just to confirm that I will have to leave with my gear, looks like I won't be taking photos after all :P

I'm a fan of 2 of the bands playing so I don't want to miss the rest of their sets because i'm not allowed to stay in with my gear!

    I nearly got kicked out of Marlay park for taking pictures of REM with this;

So I doubt they will let you stay, MCD are notoriously strict. Worst comes to worst offer to leave them your batteries and collect them after, it didn't work for me though. I gave up my expensive set of batteries (those lithiums were a rip off for the camera) and was told to look for a certain numbered security guard, no luck with that.

Yeah i would offer to give them my memory card/batteries but then if I couldn't find the security guard after I would be ****ed (especially because the bus I will be going home on leaves pretty much straight after the gig)

    ahh :(

sorry for dragging a thread up. Wanted to ask a question along same vein as this.

Anyone had pass thats specified support only at a biggish venue/gig? Wondered how this works. Assume you would get different pass or none and security told to allow you in front of pit? Any expo would eb gladly taken.

this is relevant just rather not mention why due to nervousness...

someone from MCD will escort you into the pit for the first three songs on the act you have the pass for and then take your pass off you after that and then you'll have to leave or you may be allowed to stay and watch the gig

I shot there, I got a pass for the support and was allowed to stay with my gear in my bag, the fella in charge was quite sound. I didnt have a ticket at all.

The pit wasnt very deep and the stage was quite high so it was very very hard to get the likes of the drummer.
