Does anybody know how many scratch (or better) golfers in Ireland and what percentage of membership are at that level. We are a club of 500 and have only one player.

My playing partner is off +2 and he is the lowest in his club. Think there might be a 1 handicap there also.

We have 1 international off +2/3 and a couple off scratch.

Compare that to the likes of Portmarnock that have 6 players off between +1 and +3, aswell as 6 or 7 players off scratch. Isn't it a wonder why they feature so strongly in Senior Cup and Barton Shield every year!

I agree, but all the bigger clubs do the exact same.

Not sure how many scratch golfers there are in the country, but there's at least one in my head! Unfortunately not in the arms it seems! :D

Someone told me recently that only 2% (or was it 5%?!?) of golfers have a handicap of less than 5.

Not sure of the answer Graeme but my guess would be 2%.

The average golf score per round remains at 100 strokes, an has remained so for decades, and has only reduced by 0.5 strokes since 2000.

Average score 100 and 2% play below 5 . Maybe there's hope for me yet

Just did a quick calculation on my own club (Forrest Little), a total of 761 players, 34 of which are category 1 (5.4 or less).

    That averages just over 4.46%.

Compared to Ashbourne (846 players / 12 at 5.4 or less) and that comes out a 1.42% roughly.

Compared to Kilkenny (843 players / 30 at 5.4 or less) and that comes out a 3.56% roughly.

The average of all 3 is somewhere around 3.15%, which is closer to 2% than 5%. I am officially a dork!

Very true, honorary membership with some generous expenses. That's the price of bringing silverware to a club!

And NEVER hand in a card if they are going to get point 1.

Controversial. Most of them play away for the competitive season to be honest, championships / scratch cups etc.

If you enter the comp you get you 0.1...thats how its supposed to work.

If you return a card (NR) you get a .1. If you fail to input a score/and card the .1 has to be attributed manually AFAIK and is not always done.

Also scratch and + handicaps are managed and monitored by the GUI as far as I know.

Not with some of these guys. NR their cards and dont swipe their cards when they are going out for their 2nd round in sct cups so if they play sh1t they just get into the car and go home and if they do well they swipe the card after the round and enter their score..

Maybe, but if you don't swipe before beginning play you haven't officially entered the competition. If you swipe and enter score after the fact, that's cheating.

Correct. Its unreal how many times this is done in 36 hole competitions
