PSP Homebrew and Emulators

After alot of trial and error last night, I got ChickHEN working, so I can play homebrew on my PSP. I was very surprised how polished some of these emulators were (especially VICE). Handheld is perfect for C64 games.....

I also tried SNES9x and Picodrive (both excellent.... pity about mode 7 not being fully implemented on the SNES though). I might finally get around to playing Super Metroid all the way through to the end......

I'm going to have a go at getting MAME up and running over the weekend.

So what else is worth trying?

I'm not sure if these work with chickHEN but these are the best emulators available for psp:

    Arcade/CPS3: Final Burn Alpha (FBA_lbicelyne)
    NeoGeo: mvspsp
    NeoGeoCD: ncdzpsp
    CPS2: cps2psp
    CPS1: cps1psp
    Gameboy Adv: UO_gpsp
    N64: daedalusx64

I wouldn't bother with the mame emu. You'd be lucky to get asteroids to work! How come you're just running a homebrew enabler? Can you not install a full custom firmware? What model/firmware do you have?

Nah, I have full CFW installed. I just had a nightmare getting chickHEN to flip over (it really was trial and error).

Thanks for the emu list, I'll check them out. Pity about MAME... I was looking forward to that. If NeoGeo and FinalBurn are any way good, it'll make up for it. :)

If you have full custom firmware then why do you need chickHEN?! I thought that was just a homebrew enabler for non-custom firmware? If you have full custom firmware you should just be able to load the emulators from the xmb without chickhen

I was following a guide for installing CFW, and one of the steps was to install ChickHEN first.

Oh I get it now sorry! You used chickHen in order to initially install the custom firmware, right. I thought you were loading chickhen every time you wanted to run an emulator!

What kind of functionlity does running Custom Firmware give you on the PSP?

I'm thinking of getting a PSPGo and I assume there will not be any custom firmware for that device (at least in the beginning).

do you not need a mod battery to get custom firmware

can you use chickHen to install one with out the battery and what are the diff between doing it this way and the mod way.

You don't necessarily need a pandora battery to mod a psp. There are also tiff exploits

It lets you run homebrew games, play PS1 games (if you have them) and do some under-the-hood tinkering with settings, CPU speed etc.

I didn't. I specifically found and bought a 2nd hand PSP 200x console (€79 in gamestop), and I checked the firmware before I bought it -- as long as its less than 5.5, you're OK. Install official firmware 5.03, then install ChickHEN on your memory card and play about with it until you get it working. Finally install the custom firmware. After that, you're good to go. If you completely turn off your PSP, you need to do chickHEN/CFW steps again. Its best to leave the PSP in standby mode when you're not using it.

do you use the Pandora battery only to install the cfw or does it have to be used to run the cfw as most Pandora battery i see are fat and i would like to keep the battery cover on

You use a pandora battery to put the psp into recovery mode so you change the firmware. After you have installed the new firmware you can replace the battery.

Datel sell a tool that turns regular psp batteries into pandora and back.

Take out the pandora when you're done. A pandora doesn't have some of the safety features of regular batteries, so its dangerous to run off it for any longer than necessary.

so it does the same as a soft mod with a psp that already has cfw

I used datel tool battery and a program to format my memory stick in a certain way (Magic Memory Stick) can't remember what custom firmware I installed initially. I'm on 5.00 m33-6 at the moment. Had trouble for ages getting PSX games working with popsloader. Eventually discovered it was the dodgy cheap as chips MS-PRO Duo stick I got on ebay. Bought a 4GB stick in smyths for €30 and I'm now running Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo 2 and Tekken 3. NICE. Handheld Retro Gaming :D

popsloader defualts to the last version used when you turn it on before a game, is the anthing i can do to preset version for each game had to start and restart a game when i forgot the best version to use.

Hold the right trigger as you start up the game and you'll be able to choose from the list of pops versions again.

can the PSP actually emulate N64 at full speed and sound yet? that would be cool. also whats the best SNES emu, SNES9X or something else? agreed on Picodrive for Megadrive, its an awesome emulator.

The N64 isn't quite fullspeed (probably never will be until psp2). Certain parts of some games do run fullspeed with sound (Mario64 courtyard for example), others run fullspeed only if the audio is disabled.

The best snes emu is SNES9X-TYL
