Any advice on getting a campervan for 5 weeks around New Zealand starting beginning of September, vs. doing both Islands on the Magic Bus? Which would be the better option?

Camper van is the only way to see NZ. We went with www.wildernessmotorhomes.com and got it cheap as it is winter here(still better than our summer). There are tons of camper van companies offering different types of vehicles.
Some you can google are - Space, Juicy, Backpacker rentals, wicked, britz, maui.

Campsites are around €15 a night for two people. They have all sorts of facilities and are very good but an expensive parking spot if your van has all the facilities you need. Department of Conservation campsites are excellent. Best scenic sites in the country and only €6 an night. They are generally outside the cities and only have toilets.

The camper van gives you the freedom to go where and when you like. We drove down so many side roads and saw 100's of times more than doing it by bus. The down side of the camper van is that we met very few people.

Heres my blog on New Zealand. You might get a route out of it or something to help you
