try and open a free simulator account online and play around with it

something like: http://www.deltaindex.com/xdealsimulator/ (Irish) or http://www.ac-markets.com/trading-software/advanced-trader.aspx (Switz)

It is a free way to get some experience without costing you money

yep - its FX trading - buying and selling currencies. Its risky - you could make a fortune or loose the lot in a short space of time. If your only getting involved in trading now - stay away for the moment. A lot of the buying and selling is done on the back of tech analysis - something that could take years to to get right .

I traded professionally for over 20 years.

My advice to you is don't get involved.

I made money because my employer had systems, customers, deep pockets and information flows to back me up.

The punter (you) hadn't a chance.

If you don't know what you are doing, you are putting yourself at extreme risk.
