Having upgraded to a 3GS I gave my wife my old 3G.
Within two days o2 contacted her saying her bill was €450 !!
Her usual bill on her Nokia was €35 per month.
She was shocked. Arguing her case the o2 person dropped the bill by 50% to €253. However, I still think this is crazy. We have WiFi at home and same for her at work. o2 allege the cost was incurred last Sunday morning at 7am and again yesterday. She was at home at these times and would have been on WiFi. Any one else encounter this horror ?

Data usage on the phone is
    Sent 1.3MB
    Received 46.8 MB

Perhaps she was inadvertantly using 3G for browsing??

Yes, she's was on Bill Pay of €35 PM.
Changed that today to include data plan.

She was browsing interweb via our wifi.

    Sounds like she wasn't.

Must have had WiFi turned off.

    I started a thread here
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055620889
about my iphone dropping the wireless network in my house and browsing with 3G instead.

    Issue still isn't resolved

These issues show the need for a standard unlimited data plan across the board for using not just iphone but for all the new 3g data phones. Why its not that way is madness in my eyes

Because people don't like paying for what they don't understand, and boy oh boy, do they not understand data! Most people I warn about the internet say that they won't use it. I explain how expensive it is and half the time they are in a few weeks later with an extra couple hundred on their bill. *sighs*

Not Iphone related as such but my brother in law went to france with his 3G USB dongle.....didnt realise that when using data abroad he would be roaming etc.....now I have no idea what the hell he was downloading but he got a bill from O2 for 10,000euro..........yeah, that is not a typo I did mean 10K!!!

We got a solicitor involved and wrote a letter to the CEO saying how crazy it was. We eventually got them to drop it altogether as his terms and conditions did not mention anything about roaming charges at the time....about a week later O2 updated their terms and conditions.

They dropped the bill to 45e :pac: People really need to learn that data over 3G can be expensive.

This is the crux of the matter.

On the Mobiles/PDA forum we continually get threads started by people who want to lash out and blame the network providers instead of taking responsibility to educate themselves about the cost of such services.

    Indeed!

@ Well burnt - that's a nightmare. I suppose at least O2 called you before the bill went totally out of control.

I also upgraded and gave my missis my 3G (to use on Vodafone). However the very first thing I did was turn off data on her phone! (She knows nothing about techie stuff). We have wi-fi at home, and I told her if she decided she needed the web elsewhere we'd sign her up for an add-on.

Exactly...and to be fair to the operators, they have every right to charge for the full amount if people are warned of the charges in the contract and T&C's.....But I still dont think its right. At the end of the day, bandwidth is pretty cheap these days and the prices they are charging per MB in this country is ridiculous.

O2 speakeasy customers get 50MB for 99c per day.

by comparison pay-monthly customers have to pay per kb (unless they have a data-plan) - this is a sh1tty deal for pay monthly customers. Might be worth pointing out to them wrt this bill, if your wife was to switch to speakeasy she wouldn't be subject to these ludicrous charges - is this what they want?

Lucky they dropped it by 50%. On iphone tarrif now so data no worries.

Theres been a lot of reports of rogue data use on the iPhone, seems like it seems to use 3G when it should be using WiFi quite often. Its a hard thing to prove your not doing it intentionally.

Smart move! Can you let me know how to turn data off?

Simplest & safest thing to do is to delete the APN in Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data. This will stop the iPhone using data at home. Turn off data roaming as well, I think you might be able to access data on some networks abroad even without the APN inputted!

Sufficient infrastructure doesn't exist to support it.
