Probably a silly question (but just in case, as invitational makes it sound closed in some sense). I assume it's ok to turn up and donate, even if you didn't know Joan?

The memory of poker player Joan Vickers was celebrated in style on Saturday night by friends and family at the Voodoo Card Club. A benefit tournament organised by Willo and Eamonn Connolly brought a host of players and non-players together for what turned out to be a funny, reflective night of poker and memories.

The tournament was a €140 buy-in with €40 donated for the benefit of Joan’s children. A starting stack of 10,000 chips and a 25 minute clock was surely a structure Joan would have favoured as it allowed the better player the opportunity to exercise their skill.

Despite the obvious sadness of the night the players present managed to lift the mood with good humour and many anecdotes of Joan. While Vera, Ian and Mossy chopped the money for the first three places, the make-up of the final table with five women and only four men – from a starting field where men out-numbered the women by 3 to 1 – would have made Joan smile and say in her own inimitable way; ‘Doesn’t surprise me at all, I always said women were better players than men’.

A total of nearly €2000 was raised and Eamonn & Willo would like to express their gratitude on behalf of Joan’s children to all who took part.

I would just like to give my personal thanks to all those who attended the event. Specific mention should also go to those who donated despite not being able to attend the event due to other commitments - IPPT and JP Poker amongst these. Hope to see you all again soon.
