    Hi,
I am in agony with one of teeth the last year and a half, i went to the dentist last sept 07 and he told me id need a root canal, lookin at about €1,300.
I am on a medical card and can not afford it, i told him there was no way id have that money and what were my other options.
He said the only option was to get the tooth pulled or get a loan from the bank,
So i said id just get the tooth out, i have no choice but i need to be put asleep to get it done, I have been on a waiting list since then that was Sept 07.
I am in absolute agony, and there is nothing i can do about it.
I thought the medical card or health insurance would cover it or some of it,
I just feel like crying im in that much pain cant eat, sleep constantly taking pain killers and knowing there is nothing i can do to fix it because i have no money it's just crazy.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions i would really appreciate it.
I am at the stage now where i feel like tying a string around my tooth and pulling it out myself

Why do you need to be nocked out? If it that its a difficult extraction or that you are fearfull of having it done with local anaesthetic? Let me know, I might be able to help you out with more info.....

Well he thought it would be better to be knocked out because i have muscular dystrophy and he would prefer if i had it done in the hospital under an anesthesist due to complications with my throat muscles, but he could pull it himself but i had a tooth pulled when i was 5 and was traumatised its my biggest fear :(

    Lezizi,

Why don't you attend a dentist that accepts the medical card and get them to see you cos they shoudl be able to give you something that will at least get you out of the pain that you are currently in until you get the money to get the root canal done.

Also I've known people who the health board dentist has done root canal on when they have medical card esp if someone is committed to looking after teeth in future and well motivated.

    hth

I am at my wits end, i havent slept all night the pain is so bad, i cant open my mouth, my jaw is swollen. I have been throwing up all night.
I have been ringing dentists all morning in tears telling them it was an emergency and none of them would see me with a medical card.
I even rang the hospital who said they would get me an apointment in October.
I just dont know what to do.

If you ring your local HSE office they should have a list of dentists that accept medical card patients in your area.

    Hope that helps

    btw where are you located?

A lot of dentists will do root canal for approx 600-800 euro. I expext the 1300 includes a crown? or perhaps there are other circumstances that necessitate a higher fee? in any case emergency relief can be had for as little as 100 euro and a proper root canal deferred a little.
I am surprised no dentist in Limerick can fit in a patient in pain the same day you call them. I fitted in 3 emergencies today. most days there are none so it's always easy to squeeze one in if they phone early in the morning.

    Thanks for the replies.
After phoning 7 dentists i got one who said she would see me straight away. I went to see her and got the tooth extracted. It was fine she had no problem doing it under local anesthetic, where as my own dentist wouldnt.
Im so glad it is out now :) even though i would have preferred to have gotten a root canal, it's done now and over.
Im just going to stick with this dentist in future, she was great and so accomodating.
