    Hi Guys
Need a bit of advice... I am the market for a good solid runaround. Much and all as I like the 'dogabout' Mondeo its getting well shook and I dont really trust it enough to let her indoors away any great distance in it.

Ive got the proverbial itchy feet and I am seriously considering a V40 Volvo. I worked for Hertz in '02 and '03 and we had a shed load of S40's. The best by far was the 1.9 Renault common rail diesel. I absolutely loved them. They did everthing so well.

That was when they were new... I would be looking at sommit in the 02-04 bracket and preferably an estate.

Has anyone heard anything bad or had any problems with the diesel S40 or V40...?

    Thanks lads

Besides a few warning lights and the troublesome GDi engine, I haven't heard much go wrong with them, particularly later cars. They are a comfortable and dependable car that can still look very well considering the age of the design. Don't be expecting typical Volvo load carrying capacity though.

Try and get one as new as possible as the run out models are very well equipped. Post 2000 models also had a major suspension overhaul, 115bhp 1.9 TD from 2001 onwards is a good unit and gives very little trouble. Not sure it is common rail though.

True that. The 'Classic' edition models came very well equipped with leather-faced upholstery, alloys, fogs, wood trim, INFO centre (trip computer), etc., making them very fine value for money.

I very much doubt the 1.9D is common-rail, as I don't think Volvo used the technology until they released their D5 engine.

same here. Its got 120k miles on it and aside from a ticky noise from the engine and it used jerk a little while idling but that has stopped. From what ive heard they like to be driven hard and i most certainly oblige. :D

In fact i timed 0-60 with that ipod speed application which is supposed to be very accurate and i was getting about 8.5 seconds 0-62mph! I didnt believe it so we did it with the stop watch and we still got roughly 8.5seconds which i was pretty surprised at.

That's the SE Sport model, which was exclusive to the UK afaik.

Looks like a very nice car by the way and is certainly one of the more desirable V40's.

What kinda money did it cost you all in OP? Reminds me what a desirable car the old S/V40 still is. Aged very gracefully, especially when you consider it dates all the way back to 1996ish!
