Doug Howlett suffers calf injury in training (Not Serious)

Now maybe im just being picky but is there a need for this thread? A player suffers a extremely minor injury during pre season and will be okay according to the management thus having no effect on the team etc. There's actually nothing to discuss!

Ya I agree with Stev-O i panicked and rushed into the thread! Damn you ;)
Is there an official Munster thread on here that it could have gone in?

Maybe you have a piece of paper you could have written it on, just to get it out of your system like :P

It would have been worse if a calf suffered a Doug Howlett injury.

This was reported a week ago in munster fans that Doug was on crutches.

Yet we have a detailed conversation about the mighty Nottingham RFC being turfed out of County's ground.

Compared to some of the dross thats been written on this forum this isn't the worst thread.

There's actually something to discuss in that thread this thread however there is nothing to say other then it's not needed.

Shall we started threads telling people that "X has got a new hair cut (Nothing Serious)!"

rugby player in slight injury shocker

Nearly as news worthy as this

I disagree, Leinsters best player involved in a car crash a week before the biggest game of his life with unconfirmed injuries is most certainly worthy of news.

indeed, can't really argue that the two incidents are the same...

The OP really is taking a hammering for starting this thread...

Makes me glad I didn't start my "I heard from a reliable source that Dan Carter's signing for Leinster but subsequently found out said source was taking the p**s out of me" thread

This is the last year of his contract and he has said that he would like to play in the 2011 world cup. He would have to play in New Zealand for the 2010/11 season to be considered for the squad. Link to an article here that says he will see closer to the time. He would prob have to have a great season if he went back to NZ to be considered IMO.

This is his last year alright, signed for 2.5 years originally. However don't see him making the NZ team at what 33? Especially when he was eschewed 2 years ago. Doug is an important Munster player and does well for us, more so in defence than attack - has scored a few tries but really is a more rounded player now. Probably lost a little pace over the first 5 yards , hard to see him in a All Black shirt again. Would love to get another year out of him here.

He would make in a second going by their current predicament,he would be ahaed of Cory Jane but as you say he is 33 and has lost pace,I could see him as a squad player though.

I don't believe Howlet has been that great of a signing. Much better than "I'm injured all the time" Cullen but not that great for the money he is on. He is not a gamebreaker/winner or change a game in a second. He is there too cash in and supporters do enjoy watching an ex-AB on the field but nothing that excides me. I have a sneaky feeling he might just be selected for the next WC AB group if Roko-off does not lift his game.

He's been committed to be fair but his finishing skills aren't put to best use at Munster.

I agree with Amabokke, I don't think he's been value for money.

Yes, he is an excellent rugby talent and quite the cult hero, but I don't think he was worth it. Mafi and Tipoki deserves far more plaudits as foreign signings, they were a game changing force.

Firstly I'd like to congratulate you all on turning this thread around and actually making this thread interesting.

Secondly Im not exactly sure how much he is getting paid so I cant say if he is over paid. But he has definitely been a huge addition to Munster. Although his try count isn't what many expected it to be, he has a talent for drawing in opposing players and opening space for other players to score. He has also been a huge in defense, on so many occasions making crucial tackles that could have otherwise led to trys.

Admittedly though my comments above about attack and defense can be said for Mafi aswell.

I'm a little surprised by the your comments guys!
I always felt that he played well for Munster - as I said , more in defense than attack but maybe that is the game Munster play now. He is always 100% committed in the tackle and often throws in a big hit that really sets a tone. His vision is exemplary and there was one particular game last year (v Connacht in April maybe) where he just opened defence 3/4 times with his running. I would say that he does make a game breaking run or 2 in every game but that's just me! Find the comparison with Mafi a bit unfair as wingers don't get the same ammount of ball and opportunities -in Munster anyway.

Think he offloads well and as was said does draw the hits freeing up his colleagues. I have nothing but regard for what he has done in Munster and the selfless and unspectacular way he has gone about doing it.

Would be a huge loss to us, huge. As is Tipoki.

Really? He's a classy player, but as a Leinster fan I wouldn't want Hickie back ahead of Fitzgerald and I know Shaggy'll be gone in a couple of seasons.

He's good, but if Munster got another Keith Earls you'd have to say that you could happily get rid of him.

Dig up the old lads try scoring record for this year,I bet its less than Luke Fitz and Earls.

Now take into account Munster were demolishing teams last year and Leinster went try less for a load of games.

I still see value in him but he is a spent force and being paid way too much for what he delivers,he is here for the money and nothing else.

Never looks like he bothers his hole imo and that nothing against Munster but if you compare him to Mafi youll see what I mean.

    That's too harsh in fairness.

He's not a spent force, but he's also not as good as he was at his peak. He's very good rather than properly world-class.

And I can remember a few times where he made tackles having belted across the field when he really could have given up, so he's not just a passenger. Obviously Munster matters a lot less to him than Auckland or New Zealand would, but saying he doesn't care's unfair. The differnece with him and Mafi is that Mafi only ever made it with Munster's help, so they mean a lot more to them. Munster has been far more important for him than for Howlett.

Well considering Earls was the Munster ML leading try scorer with 8 last year yes then doug didn't score as many, he scored 7 , the same as Luke's ML total so ...as I suspected you are talking nonsense.
Obviously you have never watched the tackles he puts in ...man why am I even justifying your post!??

Go watch a few munster matches live and you'll see why Howlett is rated so highly.

That man does some amount of work off camera.

To be honest I would be happy to see Howlett go if it meant a young Irish player in Felix Jones got game time. Ideally if Munster didn't sign JDV we could've had Earls learning his trade at centre and Jones on the wing which would of been great but as it is we'll see

    11.Howlett
    12. JDV
    13. Mafi
    14.Earls
    15.Warwick

    Bench : Felix Jones :(
