Hi due to work commitments am spending a good bit of time out in the Dun Laoghaire area+would like to go for some runs around there. Have been trying to map some out on mapmyruns however I am finding it difficult. Was just wondering if anyone would be able to help? Basically am looking for:

    (1) A six mile run around the dun Laoighaire area starting and finishing near the pavillion shopping centre?
    (2) Is there any nice hills around for a hill type workout? Or nice parks where i could run on the grass?

    Thanks in advance.

There are lots of hills around Dalkey and Killiney. Killiney Head/Park would be perfect for hill work.

Why not map a route that goes along the coast through Sandycove, into Dalkey up into Killiney (lots of hills) then back through Ballybrack into Glenageary? That should be around 6 miles.

    hi
    1. Along the two piers are good routes.
    2. Also down the coast path to blackrock park [near booterstown station] and back up towards sandycove [40ft] All along coast.
    3. Hills around dalkey and killney as suggested - vico rd is a great one - great training route and brill views if fine weather.
    4. Killney Hill - in and round that park area loads of trails etc. Loads of steps too where you can include drills etc.
    5. Irishift - shop based in DL I think do organised meet and run on some week ngts.
    Hope this is some use.;)

Yeah, I would agree with this. I have done a lot of running around Dun Laoghaire, and some of my long runs pass through it too.

Because its on the coast, there are a lot of flat sections to run along, and also for doing hills, there is also the Lower Glenageary road to challenge the legs.

I use mapmyruns for all my routes and for keeping track of my training schedules, its very handy. If you have a username, send me an invite (same username as on this thing) and I can do up a couple of routes for you and then I think I can send them to you to put in your collection.

BTW, if anyone is looking for long flat runs in Dublin, the best thing to do is park near a dart station, get the dart out somewhere and run back to your car. The coast road is flat all the way. I took the dart from Bray to Howth last year in training for a marathon, and ran all the way back. The course was dead flat and the scenery was spectacular (granted, there were a few nasty hills from Dun Laoghaire to Shankill, but the rest was easy going);)

I often run through DunL (I'm just about to set off on a 12 miler down that direction right now). Personally I would avoid the piers, as one of them (west) has a very uneven surface, and the other one (east) is so hard-packed that it'll contribute towards an injury. They're both fine for occasional runs, I just wouldn't run them regularly.

You're quite lucky as you can head along the coast in either direction for a lovely run,

Northwards - Run as far as Blackrock Park and back - 6 miles - flat
Southwards - Run along the coast, via the 40 foot, Colliemore Road, and run a couple of hundred metres up Vico Road, and back the same way, to make 6 miles. Stop off at the 40 foot for a refreshing swim! - 6 miles - Hilly.

Of the 2 routes KC has listed I think the 2nd one is the nicer, but depending on the weather you might have to do a bit of people dodging along the section from the Dart Station to teddy's Ice cream shop. If you want hills your best bet is to get to Dalkey and start you run from their, and you can take either the Vico road or Dalkey avenue up to Killiney village.

Hi everyone thanks so much for the replies, has really helped a lot. Its so cool to be able to come on here and just ask a few questions and get such good answers straight away. Much appreciated.

Thanks Aimman for the offer of the running maps. as soon as I register for the site I will send you an invite.

Thanks KC for the tip on running northwards to Blackrock park and back as i think i know where this is. Is it just beside Blackrock shopping centre? 6miles willl be perfect for my first run around the area.

Once i get to know the area better will try all your other suggestions. Such a nice place to run around, am glad work has brought me here.

Have to do a 20 miler in dun laoighaire on Sunday. I'm there for a conference but have no clue about the area. Exhaustion and confusion is not a good mix.

Any tips for flattish route from the village?dont mind repeating loops as long I can stay on a path and not be hopping on off footpaths

Flat? Head to the seafront and go north along the coast for 10 mile and turn back. It's all along the dart line so can't get much flatter than that. If you want hills go in the other direction;)

Out to Bull island and back will get you. 20 miles. Flat as a pancake. Beautiful run too, hugs the coast most of the way.

Or out to poolbeg light house. The other option is to run out to Howth take in one of the piers and get the dart back.
