Ipod Classic 120GB, bit of trouble

Got mine for my bday 2 weeks ago and its refusing to play songs now. Before that when I went to shuffle songs and I was skipping through and I let it play it would just keep skipping songs and not playing anything.

I haven't dropped it once or it hasn't been subject to water damage I am 110% sure. I got a case for it too the day after and it has always been in that so that would cancel out anything happening it in my pocket I would say.

Any ideas on what I should do?

Have you tried just restarting it? (hold menu and the centre button for a few seconds)
Are you using iTunes to add the music on to it or something else?

Restarting it worked! Thanks a million:D

You just saved me probably embarrassing myself in front of a load of staff.

    I'm using iTunes btw.

Just one thing while you're here, is this a usual thing to happen with iPods. Should I be worried if its happening so soon after buying it?

i got an 80gb ipod last february and it started acting up around june/july. just pausing by itself for no reason. it was annoying but i got used to it.

it then started to happen more frequently so i sent it back to apple. they sent it back saying that they couldn't find the reported problem and that there was nothing wrong with it. i was quite annoyed but didn't really know what else i could do. so i did nothing. the ipod then started freezing and not playing certain tracks. it was like the ipod was deciding what i could listen to! (seemingly my ipod is not a joy division fan, at all).

i took it to an apple retail store as i thought i might get more answers from a face to face conversation than over the phone. the woman there said the hard drive was failing. i'd just had it over a year at this stage. she said that the hard drives only last about a year or so! i was shocked at this, and quite annoyed because this fact wasn't made obvious upon purchase of said ipod.

at the moment it is still working but i don't think it'll hold out for much longer-whenever i connect it to my laptop now it causes a blue screen to appear and the laptop to restart! so i can't get any new music on it. it's rather annoying! so this could possibly be what you have to look forward to!

To suggest that iPod hard drives usually only last a year is complete nonsense, you should have pressed for a replacement if it was only just out of warranty. I have one of the first iPods released and it still works. granted the battery lasts about 10 minutes now but I use it as an external hard drive.

yeah been kicking myself ever since that i didn't go about it the right way, but ya live and learn i guess. it really bugged me though that apple said that there was nothing wrong with it when there very obviously was!

Yep, seems to have just been a misinformed/stupid employee who didn't know the difference between a HDD and a battery:P I still have my 3rd gen iPod which has a perfectly functioning hard drive, but a shagged screen (my fault) and a battery that lasts all of 5 minutes.

Your problem is that you can't connect it to your computer without it crashing for some reason. You'll need to connect it because the iPod is updated through iTunes. Can you explain what exactly happens when you do this, does the iPod have a chance to mount? Does iTunes open and does your iPod appear in the list or does it blue screen as soon as you plug it in? Have you tried plugging it into someone else's computer?

Yes that's one of the problems. What I do is open iTunes and then connect the iPod. Windows itself recognises it but iTunes does not. A message box from Windows pops up when I connect my iPod saying that the iPod needs to be scanned as it has been corrupted or something. If i try and scan the iPod nothing happens except the computer freezes. So i have to go into task manager and cancel everything.

Every time that I connect the iPod I leave it alone to do it's thing, iTunes is the only application open. After about 5 minutes a blue screen appears and then the laptop restarts.

I haven't tried plugging into anyone else's computer because nobody I know here has iTunes.

I fixed the problem. I tried reformatting my Ipod again. Then reset it in itunes. Enabled it for manual management of music. Also make sure that itunes does not open automatically when ipod is connected.

    Now download Winamp http://www.winamp.com/
I think it automatically asks you if you want to import your iTunes. Do that. Now hook up your Ipod and click on portables. Your device should show up. Now click AutoFill and let Winamp get to work! :) I also disabled the album art from showing up on my Ipod as I think this where a lot of the corruptions on my disc came from. But anyways it's fixed now and it works!

So I think download Winamp if you're having problems with Itunes and see if that works :) worth a shot! :D
