Norton Ghost problem

Just bought be a new hard drive for the laptop, so I made a backup of my current hard drive with Norton Ghost (version 14).

So what I did was Backup to external drive -> Install new hard drive -> boot up with Ghost -> restore copy of original hard drive to new internal hard drive -> reboot

Has worked fine for me in the past on other laptops, but when I boot up with the new hard drive, all I get is the blank screen (after the BIOS) with the cursor in the top-left hand corner of the screen. No disk activity light, no Windows, nothing.

Any ideas where the problem might be?

It's a Windows XP laptop, with 1Gb RAM.

No Hard Drive? Check the BIOS and make sure it's being detected.

I think the biggest problem is that you're using a Norton product. :pac:

I can't help you, but if all else fails do a copy again but use something like Clonezilla, or Paragon who are currently giving away an RC of their 2010 edition for free for a limited time only. :D

Given the fact that Norton is actually writing to the new hard drive, I'd say it's a safe bet to assume the hard drive is being detected. :D

(the POST screen confirms it is detecting it)

    Tous chez! :)

Are they the same type of drive? Are you sure the new one isn't S-ATA?

100% certain. Aren't the connectors different on an SATA drive? I think they are.

It's an old laptop, so I was quite careful to ensure I ordered an IDE drive. But Norton seems to write to it without problem, this is what I can't fathom. It's showing up as bootable when I use the disk utilities that come with Norton.
