Does it happen immediately you play MAME, or is it after a period of time?

Is it a straight power-off, or is it a Blue Screen of death?

Does it happen with any other software, or is it just MAME?

Does it happen with other games?

To add to the above, does it just happen with the build you're using? Have you tried any other builds/older versions? If you haven't, do.

Are you running MAME off the DVD? Maybe if MAME is trying to write to the DVD, it's crashing?

    Ok, sorry, didn't read fully...

Might be worth just checking that the directories are pointing to the right place, and that all your files inside the mame directory aren't read-only (sometimes I've seen files come off disks that retain read-only properties, so this may be the problem).

After this, try another build maybe, or a clean extraction of the mame archive - maybe some settings from Vista aren't compatible with your XP system.

I can't really see this causing a laptop/PC to shutdown like that.

My initial suspects are overheating (not as likely) and graphics card (driver possibly).

So, the first thing I would do is get all the Windows updates up to date and update the graphics card driver.
