Has anyone noticed that CRC have stopped accepting payments by laser? I got paid today and was looking to buy at least €100 worth of much needed kit and no feckin laser available, cant use my credit card anymore and bitterly disappointed, no new cassette for my mtb :(

AFAIK the site must be .ie for an Irish laser to work. I had similar problems before and that and thats what AIB said when I rang them.

yes, laser only works in Ireland. Cyclesuperstore accept it.

thanks for the input guys, they also accept cheques so might use that archaic payment method or maybe barter some sheaves of wheat :)

Laser works In Ireland, and Outside, Just not in the UK. It's one of those oddities. There's something on wikipedia about it, but from the top of my head, all the Debit systems became laser a few years ago, and most work with each other, but the Switch/Solo wasn't compatible with Irish laser systems. I think I remember using Laser in Denmark or somewhere, but I know for a fact it won't work in the UK.
You could take out cash a drive up if you felt bored. I went up the showroom a few weeks back to pick up a bike. Was great, ready built for me, and I got the the stem changed for free. Giants causeway is an hour from here if you wanted to tell the missus you were bringing here there, and you could pop in on the way.

Have used my Laser card in UK supermarkets many times. Not because it's a laser card but because it's a Maestro card too which is the Visa-run international debit card scheme. Laser is an Irish system an not international in any way.

@OP there's a Maestro option on CRC checkout so you can pay with your laser card as long as it has the Maestro symbol on the back

Why not set up a prepaid Visa a/c like http://www.entropay.com?
    Would that work for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭bonnieprince

I will look into that rebel.ranter.

Recieved an email this morning from CRC and they have advised they used to accept Laser but due to issues with payments they have removed this service from their site. So i was not dreaming which is great for the ole sanity!!

CRC advised use bank transfer or paypal.

I am going to try bank transfer which costs nothing for a standard international payment. Paypal do not accept Laser cards even though they accept debit cards.

    Thanks for the replies.

Who are you with? Ulster Bank are charging me something like 50 cent for the privilege.

I am with AIB, they have a standard (€0 for 3 days processing) and an urgent feature (€12.70 for 1-2 days processing) which is good i think.

Ok, I thought all Laser was Maestro these days. Good to know that it should work. What bank is your laser with?

Oh, BTW, I should add the CRC showroom isn't open the weekend which is a pity.

With AIB for Laser and have the Maestro logo on it but i was under the assumption that Maestro only worked in UK.

    stuf et at.

Laser is the name for the Irish debit card, Maestro is owned by MasterCard (NOT VISA) which enables any card with the Maestro brand to be used internationally.

The reason your Maestro branded card isn't accepted in the UK is that when Maestro took over Switch in 2005, MasterCard set up UK Maestro (as opposed to International Maestro) - confusing I know!

Your card is rejected on the UK sites because some on-line sites only accept UK Maestro.

Visa on the other hand are a competitor of MasterCard's and they also provide debit cards but with both use in Ireland and internationally. Web sites won't distinguish between UK / Ireland and the rest of the world.

Banks worldwide have licences with Visa and MasterCard to use their brands.

Try using 3V vouchers, I know it can be a bit of a hassle getting the amounts to match with purchases but they work on the CRC site.

Sorry mods for bumping a 3 year old thread, if you want to lock it feel free but i thought it better to use an existing one than starting a new one.

I managed to use a laser card on the site over the last few days. I didnt think i would be able to, but i was a bit desperate, so i put through the sale and got an order dispatched notice this morning. I know laser cards are thankfully being fazed out but it might be useful for others, or some sort of fluke, im not sure.

Thats the thing, its a laser/maestro card. I even went through the maestro pay option. Either they have changed their policy or its a fluke.

If CRC's past security performance is anything to go by, you won't even have to go to the bother of buying stuff yourself.

    Paypal or death!
