I have a nice 2 year old springer spaniel and i was thinking about breeding off her,and i was wondering if its worth 400 euro to breed off a ftch just to have that on her pedigree as some of the lads in my gun club have good hard hunting dogs which i could breed off for nothing

I wont pretend to be an expert on the subject but i have 2 springer bitches and a springer dog. one of the bitches has ftch bloodlines and the other bitch is her daughter out of my own unregistered dog. To cut a long story short the registered bitch is gunshy which proves that breeding isnt everything, so i decided to breed her to my own dog and she had 5 pups, 4 of which, including the one i kept are turning into unreal workers, the other one went to a friend of mine as a pet. So i wouldnt be against or for bloodlines, id just go for whatever dog you prefer.

If your breeding for papers the most important thing is to have ftch on the mothers side, if i were you i would get a good hard hunting dog from someone in the club and save your 400euro.

+1 paper work means fa. You want the genes of a good worker in the mix not the ones of a show pansie that's never seen a ditch.

but what about selling the pups

but what about selling the pups
People who are buying pups to hunt them will buy hunting strain, people who are buying trial dogs will buy pups with both parents having ftch. As for selling pups you have to consider what you want? If it were me i would breed to get a few good pups for myself and flog the rest of them as pets or working dogs.

If the first attempt is a sound combination that produces good workers stick to it if you want to breed her again and word of mouth will do the rest. As you said, you can get the bitch looked after for nothing by a dog you know is a good hardy worker. What more could you desire ?

Ok you might have to sell the pups a bit cheaper but as things stand the populace isn't exactly falling over itself buying pedigree dogs at the moment either.

If I were you I'd go the gunclub way. Get her sorted for nothing, get the pups wormed and get their jabs done. Sell them at 10-12 weeks for €150 - 200 each and make a modest profit after paying the vet.

P.S. a friend of my dad done exactly that. His bitch is a cross between a pedigree GWP and good worker GWP with zero paperwork. He bred her with a GWP dog from another lad in the club with zero paperwork but working excellent. She's had her fourth litter ( litter isn't it ? ) a couple a weeks ago and the pups were sold months before. So far there hasn't been a bad dog out of the combination. My old man has one from her first breeding and the dog is a legend.
