For Self defense

I'm looking at watching some classes in ju jitsu and tai jutsu and joining one of the classes, but I was wondering how useful it is for self defense. Is boxing or muay thai really the best way to go?
Two things put me off, I'm really unfit and I've felt embarrassed before because of this (and dunno if I would enjoy it or perservere). Second, I want to join a university club, they only do ju jitsu and tai jutsu, so for either of the other arts I would have to pick a club outside of the university.

    Any advice?

For grappling BJJ or Sub wrestling are the best imo, for striking then Boxing and Muay thai are the best striking systems imo.

Definitely one of the best ways to go.

Don't let that bother you. The expectation is that people starting out are unfit (at least that's my expectation). I was a bleedin' state when I started. :)
