Apologies if this has been discussed numerous times :)

Was talking to a friend recently about work/jobs....

So this guy is living with girlfriend (who works part-time, min wage) and their 3 kids.......they have a 250k mortgage....

So basically he says that now that he is out of work (was working as electrician) they are no worse off with all their benefits and are getting their mortgage paid!

Surely this cant be right???? or am i being naive!

I understand people are struggling and need help but when you are no worse off what is the incentive to go out to work again!

i cant even afford to move out of home due to all these tax increases etc and i work full time!

Yes, that might be true. But the mortgage interest is what is being paid, not the mortgage, and if the mortgage is being paid, its not being paid by the welfare. Instead its being paid by the insurance they took out with the mortgage. Thats all.

He may also be on Jobseekers Benefit, which is not means tested. When this runs out in a year, he will be on JobSeekers Allowance, which is.

So maybe things aren't as rosy as he is making out! :(

I was starting to consider handing in my notice and jumping on the band wagon :D - joking

I know you're only joking, but to qualify for jobseekers benefit you have to have been made redundant or lost your job. You won't qualify for it if you quit! :)

They are likely worse off but he's trying to paint a rosy picture. Or else things weren't so rosy before either.

They may be getting mortgage interest supplement - but this isn't helping them pay off their mortgage, just keeping the wolves from the door.
