    Hi folks,

Nearly finished the restoration of my 1974 Mercedes 230.4 and rang up for a few insurance quotes...

I'm 25, clean Full license for nearly 6 years and 3 years NCB. Car is stored away from my house in a garage, so will occasionally spend a night on my driveway.

First Ireland - €475 Fully comp, 4000 miles
Hibernian - €253 Fully comp, 5000 miles but you have to keep it in a garage (she was strict on this)
Carole Nash - €209 Fully comp, 4000 miles

I'm still to try AXA, but judging on what I've seen other people pay, I can't see them beating CN. I was just wondering what peoples experiences were of Carole Nash?

    Mark

Are CN a broker or an insurer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

    I believe they're a broker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

I wonder where they'd be insuring you? If you could find out, it may be cheaper to go direct.

im with axa...their axa plus discounts are really worth having, i travel on Stena quite often and get 12% genuine discount on their fares which probaly means i get my premiums back nearly each year! Discount aplies to halfords too which can be handy.

Current quote to renew is just over €400 for 4 cars..although i hear Aviva Hiobernian will cover two fro €250 so I'll be checking that out as well as Im only insuring two this time round.

Carole Nash is an insurer, but from what I heard from experiences in the past is to take extra care in checking out the small print!! They seem to only cover your car if it is garaged, so if you don't have a garage or if it's stolen in front of your house, there is no cover...

Also, and this goes for any insurance company, "Fully Comp" is totally useless unless you AGGREE a value with the insurer upfront!
Because if your mini / escort / manta is most worth something like say 2,5k / 4k / 6k , when it comes to determining the value in case of an accident you may find, they will only look at a value of about 750 - 1000 euro!!!! So to avoid nasty surprises, it's wise to get an aggreed value for the policy!

ah well, imho Insurance is to cover mainly legal and medical expenses and, as far as my Classics are concerned, I would, if at all possible, prefer to retain my car after an accident than to get cash for it. You are quite right about agreed values though

I was with Carole Nash for a few years but I moved to AIG through First Ireland, mainly due to the aforementioned small print. It made me more than a little nervous, especially as I was using my old E21 on a regular basis and had a young baby to think about. Tread carefully!

Ditto. there was some small print about my car not being insured for theft during the night or something weird. There is a thread here about it.

Carole Nash are underwritten by Groupama these days...

In response to your posts, I have put together the following response:

I can confirm that Carole Nash is a broker and that we are underwritten by Groupama for our classic car product in Ireland. This has given us great benefits this year, notably the competitiveness of our rates. We have gone to great lengths to re-assess our product so it is not only a more competitive premium, but also to include some extra benefits that customers will find usesul - including the full Irish and European breakdown cover.

I can also confirm that we will now cover cars that are not garaged (outside of the Dublin area) as we have received a lot of feedback from clubs and customers explaining the difficulty and impossiblity of always being able to garage their car. As you can see our rates are extremely competitive and are definitely directed toward the vintage and classic car enthusiast, so you will find mileage limitations and agreed values are part of our product. nb. Agreed values are subject to photographs and any supporting evidence you may have as proof.

To reassure you regarding your concerns on insurance small print - all limitations and exclusions to your policy are discussed over the phone and in our documents so you should be fully satisfied that what you are buying is what you need and will cover you should you suffer a claim.

I hope this has helped with some of your questions. If you have any more questions please call our classic car number for a quotation or advice on 1800 930 801.

    Thanks

    Andrew Mellor
    Head of Carole Nash Ireland

You know there are not many companies who would come on to boards.ie and answer questions, well done.

OK, so are cars covered by CN covered for theft 24 hours a day wherever they may be or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭gfwd

Doesn't particularly reassure me either but it's good to know that our opinions, as classic owners, are taken on board by at least one of the companies out there. Fair play Andrew.

    Corktina

In reply to your question I can tell you that your classic car would be covered for theft 24 hours a day.

The condition we do apply is that if a customer should declare they keep their vehicle in the garage at home, when you are at home, we expect this to be the case between the hours of 10pm - 6am. Should the car be stolen from the driveway or the street despite having been told that the car is in the garage, that is when the claim would be subject to referral.

Should you be away from home; on holiday or business or whatever it may be, your car is covered for theft. In this case the only exception would be should you leave the keys in the ignition - this again would be referred.

As I understand it these are also fairly general conditions applied to theft claims and conditions, so may well be the case with other companies in this market.

I hope this is clear and helps a little.

    fair enough..Ive Pmd you for a quote...renewal overdue with Axa (11 7 09

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

fair do's ...CN premium for two cars for me €198 fully comp as opposed to AXA's €387 tpft.... you cant argue with figures like that so I have covered my cars with them.Quite a turn round from my earlier fairly beligerant attitude!

AXA were in my bad books anyway as my renewal preium was €406 for 4 cars and they only reduced this to €387 for two cars.... ridiculous

Much, much better than my current Axa premium with three cars - I was with CN when I got my first classic - their international breakdown service was an added bonus when my car broke down in France.

FWIW, Axa never know how many cars I currently have and at least one insurance disc has to be chased on renewal.

I'm with CN - no issues, good offering and price (IMHO).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

When you say "no issues", have any arisen, i.e. the need to make a claim?

I was with CN and changed a couple of years ago, mainly because of the small print and lack of clarity about what was covered and what was not. I was not reassured when I called them to discuss; 3 cars, one garaged, two on the yard.

I will be calling around come renewal, next month.

i have to say I regard my premium as paying for a square of paper entitling me to be on the road and giving me legal and medical expense cover rather than covering the risk of theft or fire (both of which I limit the risk of as far as possible by locking my car up as secure as i can and by disconecting the battery whenever I can. Should a claim arise and the car NOT be a total loss, I would prefer to retain it and one day re-build it, so the liklihood of me claiming is actually very small

I went for AXA in the end - more expensive, but they'll give me an agreed value.

The posts above *are* reassuring and it is nice to see customers being listened to and directly answered.

However I was with CN when a lorry drove into the door of my 68 Merc (which my wife had decided to open without looking ) They wanted me to pay the majority of the cost of the repair on the basis that a new door on an old car would improve the car and enhance it's value, which is betterment and therefore outside the scope of the policy! It took months and a referral by me to the insurance ombudsman to get them to agree to pay in full for the repairs. Very unpleasant experience.

I have tried Carole Nash a few times in the past and they won't even quote me.

Before I purchased a 944 Turbo in 2007, I rang them to see if they'd do classic insurance for a 25 year old.
When I got the car I was then told I had to be 28, which as you can imagine was a major inconvience.

Eventually I got a full time policy with XS Direct (excess of €1000, not €4000), so kudos to them for providing a great service.
Might I add, they dropped my premium by over 40% in my second year with them.

Last November I bought another car and thus relegated the 944 to weekend usage.
Rang Carole Nash again, now I had to be 30!

I got my classic insured with First Ireland in the finish up, and again very helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

I don't think I'll ever bother to try Carole Nash again, if they're not even able to get their quoting methodology correct, what hope is there regards claims??

having to be 30 is a problem i would like to have....:(

In fairness the answer is "no". I have never had a claim with any Company (Fingers Crossed).

My car is kept in a shed, rarely used and isn't hugely valuable (maybe somewhere between 3 and 5k at a guess).

The policy is really only to protect me against 3rd party claims and breakdowns (none to date). I look for value for money so that I can keep the car in these recessionary times.

I hope I never have to claim but some of the posts on here are beginning to make me nervous!!

In summary "no issues" is a bit misleading so I take your point. Thanks.

Got a ballpark quote from CN for a kitcar a few years ago, got the car a couple of months later and CN told me they had just stopped doing them (even though they still do them in UK). It cost me a fe*kin fortune to insure it elsewhere. Couple of years later I got a spitfire. Insured it for a year with CN and then they told me that they would no longer insure it because I don't have a garage even though it's parked in my drive in a very queit area. Bottom line: don't expect any favours from CN.
BTW Hibernian were also were a big disappointment. Had bad ripoff experiences with FBD over the years as well. They are all totally mercenary. My advice, shop around and don't feel guilty about changing insurers whenever you get a better deal.

blah blah blah etc etc. Bottom line: don't expect any favours from CN. Don't expect to get a quote for insurance from anyone and have the quote remain valid months later when you actually get the car you were quoted on

There, fixed that for you. Sucks that a company decided to stop reselling a product on the market, but that's how it goes. You should have known better than to actually buy the car before getting an updated quote though. Everyone knows an insurance quote is time bound, and putting in the call would have saved you the trouble surely. ;)
