    Hey,

The timing belt went on my car last year. I went to a main dealer, got the head skimmed, new timing belt, head gasket, the works.

Now the car has started drinking coolant and there's mayonaise under the oil cap. Can I go back to the garage to complain?

    Thanks,
    B

What car is it? Year? If it's a year ago they probably wouldn't even entertain a complaint. Besides, a year is a long time in the life of an engine.

My gut says Punto, Rover, MG or Golf

I doubt you'd have a leg to stand if you attempted to link your current fault to the repair a year back.

How many miles on the engine since the previous repair?

The cars done about 10,000 miles.
About 8 months ago I got the head gasket replaced. Now the headgasket seems to be gone.

Surely the repair should last a hell of a lot longer than that!

It should have lasted longer - but the reason it failed this time round is what is important. Unless it's something really obvious (and if it was it probably wouldn't have lasted 10,000 miles) you're going to have a hard time proving that it was faulty workmanship.

That might not be the response you were looking for but it's the harsh reality of the situation.

You say that the headgasket 'seems' to be gone - you should probably have this confirmed in case it is something else. There is more than one reason for mayonaise.

Well the infuriating thing is I asked them to do the piston rings in case they were damaged. They told me they'd never seen piston rings going after a belt failure, and if its not the rings, its the head gasket which chould last longer than 10,000 miles!

I've serviced the car since and checked the levels ever wkend.

I have never seen piston rings go as a result of belt failure either.

The sludge you see maybe caused by something as simple as a cracked breather pipe. Get the diagnosis confirmed - you maybe worrying yourself unnecessarily.
