London 2012 - Will you go?

So the Olympics are back in London for the third time in 2012 (correct me if I'm wrong). The closest they've been to Ireland in a long time. I know it's only 2009 but there was a piece in the news there about it. They've made a train called the Javeline that travels in and out of the station.

Anyway, I've always been a big fan of the olympics. What's better than watching the best people in the world at some random event? From weight lifting to boxing to swimming, the olympics is good stuff. A nice break from watching soccer, football and rugby matchs 24/7 and nothing else.
So to get to the point, what do you think about the olympics, and will you go to 2012?

Will you be going to the London Olympics in 2012? 72 votes

Probably not, but my father is into athletics and all that. Might be nice for him to go see.

Wouldn't mind watching the boxing and judo events though! Will see yet.

I'd love to go and see the gymnastics events and some of the swimming. But it would be expensive, so we'll see!

No, and I live there (here). I can just imagine how the English will hype this thing up until it's just sickening. Olympics are not important, not since the end of the Cold War.

I'd imagine accomodation in London and flights would be unreal expensive at the time. Hopefully I could find a friend or a friend of a friend to keep me there for a while. How much do tickets for an event in the olympics usually cost?

Depends on the events, but they can get really expensive. My family went to the Atlanta games in 1996, and that was an experience. The most popular events like gymnastics, swimming and track and field sold out within minutes and good seats were really expensive, hundreds of dollars back then. The hotel we stayed in was about an hour's drive from Atlanta - everything else was sold out or prices were through the roof. We managed to see some small basketball games, baseball games, and got nosebleeds to one gymnastics competition (not a final).
Ideally, I'd love to get decent seats to all of the gymnastics events and some of the swimming finals, but I'm sure that the ticket total alone would cost thousands of Euro's. If I go, I'd absolutely try to stay with a friend.

D'you know, provided I get accomodation, I'd nearly go to London to just be a part of the atmosphere there at the time. Then again it'll depend on my circumstances at the time but it'd be a pity to miss it.

Yeah, the atmosphere is really incredible, definitely worth experiencing at least once in your lifetime. And you could probably get tickets to smaller events fairly easily and cheaply, and that would add to the experience (if you didn't want to drop a ton on the more expensive tickets for the popular sports).

    +1,

I can't stick them (the english media I mean). All we'll hear is how some chump is bound to win everything, purely because he's english. I used to vomit every year when the tennis would come on and that boring posh gimp henman would be on the front and back page of every paper.

And the world cup. 40 fooking odd years ago. let it go.
