An interesting (and commonly asked) question on putting in a sand arena has been asked here on the Equestrian forum.

Any chance of some of you guys coming in on the thread as this comes up every couple of months and it would be interesting to have a thread to refer to that has both horse owners and people with the building knowledge in the same place!

Sorry mods if this isn't on!

i may have this wrong but there will be horse in here right?

my concern would be the the horses could go through the sand and injured themselves on the large stone you used on your base.

perhaps you could use large stone then something like 804 with a geotextile on the top then your thick layer of sand.

if you say this area does not get wet drainage should not be an issue.

but be wary when you are digging into the ground as water may appear there depending on how deep you go.

as for the sand i would not use a sharp sand ..... cant think of the finer sand ( ducting sand i think) nice and fine and provided there is no running water on it can compact nice enough for a solid surface. ( but not sure if hard or soft is what you are looking for)

No, Syd it doesn't. Class 3, Part 10., it was added a while back to make it easier to get the necessary grants.

    thanks PUT, hadnt see that....

ive actually done 2 applications for sand arenas in the last 5 years... but they were part of larger applications so we didnt check for exemption...

i think that condition 2. "shouldnt be used for staging of public event" would catch a lot of people though.... most arenas i know stage some kind of event periodically..

Yeah, I think the exemption came in for the smaller, private, exercise arenas (25m x 14m) to help the grants situation with them.

I've done a stable block with an exempt sand arena.
