hi blorg i sat on a trek 1.2/1.5/1.9 today and a torino today.

the torino was a lovely lite bike ,is there any where i can see the focus or boardman in the southeast .

what kind of money are you chatting about for a carbon bike in the two you have named with a good kit on it.

    thanks jw

Both the carbon Boardman and the Focus Cayo 105 are ~£1,000 from Halfords and Wiggle respectively. The Boardman has a mostly SRAM rival groupset which is probably a bit better than Shimano 105. I had a Cayo before and it was a very nice bike. Planet X is also a good option if you can stretch the budget a bit, they have one at £1,000 with a mostly 105/Ultegra mix, an extra £100 if you want them to build it for you.

I have never ridden one but Claud Butler don't really have a great reputation, especially not for road bikes. Someone else posted on here that in their opinion it was not a good bike.

BTW oflahero's point is reasonable, you will get better answers if you take the time to post more coherent questions. Regarding those two CB bikes 105 is better than Tiagra. Whether it is worth paying X where we don't know the value of X is another question.

Sure? Cos you spelt it wrong twice in the first post.
Either way, claud bu[lt][tl]er are very ordinary, and trading on an old 'good' name. Falcon cycles IIRC. Wouldn't touch them to be honest. Had a CB MTB for a couple of years, absolutely nothing special.

yeah I'd imagine there's a sudden increase in the sound of scraping, and many more empty barrels.

whats the pros and cons of the two bikes i mentioned ,im not into MTBs. Are all bike not just components on a frame.

so how good is the frame ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Quigs, whose opinion I would respect, reckons the frame is shíte. Rob Fowl, whose opinion I would also respect, reckons it is a brand steeped in history... This is true but the same would go for Raleigh, doesn't mean I would buy one now.

Why are you hooked on the CBs? There are many more brands available on the market, you asked for opinions on the CBs, you were told they were not great, yet you persist with CB. You've clearly made your mind up that you are going to buy one.

I find roadbikereview a good resource for specific models.

DirkVoodoo has a Ridley and it's right tasty.

The Ridley would be much better buy, I would go for that. With Ultegra that would be a fantastic bike, even with 105 it would be very nice. You may never need to buy another bike if you get the Ridley.

Best of look on the new bike. Throw up a pic of it.

On the rabbit thing. While very tasty, you cannot survive on a diet of rabbit. It is like celery in that it takes more calories to digest than is actually in the meat itself

I've a ridley excalibur which I've raced and trained on since 2004. It's a fabulous frame. I've no quibbles at all. It's even survived a bad crash (lost my upper lip, nose and 5 teeth but thank God the bike was ok ). Mine is built up with 9 speed dura ace and an FSA compact now but I can't recommend them highly enough.
Also have a Ridley Noah built up wiht Dura ace 7900, The frames is also fantastic less keen on the 7900 though only used since March and showing alot of wear and tear already. If I was choosing again woud have gone for a chorus groupo.
For road bikes Blorgs right re Focus and Boardman they have much better reputation as road bikes (as does the planet X).
Have a look at the Ribble website as well they have some really good deals at present (you would need to know your size in frames though )

thanks rob ,il keep the ridley i think .waisted on me at the moment .
il start up in the miles from now .

as far as the diet goes iv plenty of venison in the freezer and there is a field of spuds just up the road.

bulling to get out again this eve ,weather so bad this eve i did not let the dogs out in it.

my mate is planning on getting a Claude Butler Vicenzo on thursday, should i tell him to steer clear?

I have just bought a Claud Butler Strada, I would not claim to know all about the world of bikes. I have had 2 Claud Bulter MTBs prior to this road bike (still have them 12 years later!).
I was originally after a Trek but due to lack of availability & advice from the shop (who's owner I know since his shop opened in 1989) I bought the Strada. The Strada has a carbon frame (with full Tiagra) & actiually looks to be better built than an equivalently priced Trek which seemed to have a bit of a mix & match group set). I know there's carbon frames & carbon frames with a world of difference (i.e. weight). I know you guys suggested other brands other than Trek but I was just giving my experience at purchase time. I was also looking at BH & Felt.
I only plan to use it for a bit of exercise 1-2hrs a night 3-4 nights a week, not competing in events or anything. I know weight is a big differentiator in bikes & that is one of the main differentiators between groupsets like Tiagra-105-Utegra-Dura Ace etc. I could probably shave a lot more weight off my own person that would contribute more than Ultegra components would yield in the weight saving department! :)

I am not trying to defend the Claud Butler brand or even defend my purchase I was just wondering why exactly they were bad?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭jwshooter

i asked the same question ,as is it not only a frame with after market components on it .

kennys for bikes have a 56cm carbon CB for E1200 cant remember the group set.

Not a bad brand at all, It's basically a franchise at the moment but most carbon frames at entry level are much the same. CB have a better rep as MTB/hybrid/touring bikes though
