Cold Drinks after running/training

    Simple question:
Is it a bad idea to have a cold drink after running?
For that matter what about hot drinks?

I like a pint of cordial out of the fridge after a run, but someone suggested recently that it could be bad for the stomach after running.

    Any thoughts?

    A.

This is not an expert opinion but my uptake on it is that the body can absorb liquid at room temp quicker / better than if cold or hot.

Bearing in mind your body is working quite hard during exercise it then has to work harder again to deal with the liquid.

Thats my understanding which could be completely wrong!!

Yeah, room temperature is better. Cold drinks also will increase you body temperature as the body has to heat it up to a temperature at which is can be absorbed, making your already wrecked body under even more stress. :D

anyone have any proof of drinkins cold drinks being bad? ive never heard of the body having to warm something up to absorb it!!!! Well i dont have any proof of this either now but just as a counter arguement, why wouldnt a cold drink be good, seeing as your body after exercising is sweating to try and cool your body, from the outside in (ie it cools your skin the most) Wouldnt a cold drink be good to lower the body temperature from the inside out. this drinking room temperature water sounds like some madana crap. my guess if you find after drinking really cold drinks your stomach hurts, dont! if you dont notice it why not if you like it that way!!!
I dont know why anyone would want to have a hot drink ;D

I probably didn't word that very well but your body heats/cools things to body temperature.

I think its worth mentioning im pretty sure the body doesnt go around heating and cooling things except itself! if cold drink comes in, its the cold drink that would cool the lining of the stomach and hence the stomach will warm itself (through blood flow to the area, metabolism etc) as a consequence the liquid drink will become warmer until it reaches body temp. Its not that the drink hits the stomach and the body increases its temperature to say 40degrees until the drink is at 37degrees!

Which your entire body has to work to do...

The general belief is, liquid that is already at room temperature will rehydrate you quicker than a liquid that is warm or cold.

im not disputing that belief(although i see no evidence for it) Im really just saying perhaps instead of the benefit of quicker hydration, a cold drink may help your body cool down quicker(hence saving your body the "work") Seeing as after exercise the body is too hot i dont think there will be any significant "work" for your body to do. And sure it wouldnt take that long to warm(seeing as a cold drink drink will warm quickly enough at room temp never mind body temp) and your body wil be able to absorb it then, if it hasnt been already!

"Is drinking cold water during or after exercise good for you or bad for you? Does the temperature of the water matter at all?
Answer: Believe it or not, cold water is absorbed faster by your body than water at room temperature or at body temperature. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that water and other drinks be chilled when used for exercise. "
    From: http://walking.about.com/od/fluids/f/coldwatermyth.htm
and here is a link to the abstract of the paper they refer to
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9303999?ordinalpos=&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.SmartSearch&log$=citationsensor

In this abstract it says "It is recommended that ingested fluids be cooler than ambient temperature [between 15 degrees and 22 degrees C]"
This paper has been cited 112 times so i think id trust it. So OP id advise you to keep drinking your cold drink after exercise, although i dont think it matters incredibly much.

Fair enough, I was looking for an article to back up what I was saying but I wanted to go and train and couldn't find one quickly enough on any of the journals I have access to. :p

That being said, I'm sure I can find and article or two to support what I was saying and another article or two that says you should drink hot drinks.:pac:

Thermodynamics/Physics proves that if you put something colder into something hotter the hotter thing will get colder as heat naturally goes from colder places to hotter places. Notice that its colder and hotter, not cold and hot.
i.e the same fact is true when you are dealing with 2C and 4C.

Drinking very colder drinks is bad for your stomach/digestion. It essentially freezes the villi in your intestine. This means that they stop absorbing nurtrients from the food and food will pass through too quickly
i.e. a dose of the trots.

You will often notice that you get this when you are away on holidays, other than bad food its usually because you are having lots of drinks with ice in them or ice creams.

    So remember, cooler, not cold.

I heard before you burn 17 calories drinking a pint of iced water.
I do know and maybe it's more a preference than a scientific fact that during the Dublin Marathon when it's cold, one of our guys cycles around the course with the drinks in a bag with a hot water bottle, apparently the runners find it easier to drink when compared to cold water - which is important in getting the right amount of liquid in.
