Newbie Question re: Setup & Configuring FTA & associated equipment

    Hi everyone,

I've decided to upgrade my ancient TV and wonderful TV Aerial (4 whole channels) to a FTA system & new Flatscreen TV. SO basically this is a new installation for all intents & purposes.

I need advice on what equipment you would recommend to meet the following requirements.

    1. I am in East Cork and need a FTA Receiver & Dish (what size dish do you recommend for basic FTA channel viewing - BBC and so forth)

    2. Is it possible to get a receiver which will also take inputs from my existing TV aerial

    3. Can a receiver also be purchased with a HDD to allow for direct recording from satellite/TV, and would it have PVR functionality (Trying to avoid too many set-top boxes) - and can I record to my existing DVD Recorder?

    4. Would like to future-proof the kit - any recomendations?

I know this probably sounds extremely basic to the forum, but there is so much info out there I'd really appreciate advice from folks who've been there and done it!

    Thanks in advance folks!

The supplied link certainly seems to fit the bill generally. But just to give some independant answers:-

I think 60cm dish at a min, 80cm def large enough. The stickies in the this forum should list a few suppliers (might help ensure you get value for money whereever you buy).

Yes - the MVision Combo box can take an aerial for DTT. There may also be other boxes - the terrestrial forum has info on this in the stickies.

PVR - the Humax Freesat PVR is quite mainstream and will record all Sat channels on the Freesat EPG. Other PVRs are imminent, pannasoinc have some out that include DVD or Blue ray recordrs. Some of the Combo boxes support recording to external HDD via USB. Richersounds.ie is good value for the Humax PVR

Your question specified FTA - so beware Freesat is a subset of FTA.

As for future proof - that's unlikely - but making sure the TV supports DTT is about the best you can do - if you are not happy buying a DTT set top box later.

I don't know the status of DTT in East Cork - certainly it isn't officially online yet but may be in test.
