Stupid referee costs Donegal ladies

Witnessed the most stupid piece of refereeing yesterday

Down had just scored to go 1 point ahead with 60 seconds left on the clock
Donegal gain possession from kickout, couple of passes later the Donegal midfielder is fouled by a Down player but shrugs her off, keeps possession & is going forward with the ball in her hand ( Donegal had scored a couple of great points in the 2nd half by working the ball from the goalkeeper all the way forward & over the bar so there was still a chance of an equalising point )
Theres 32 seconds left on the clock
What does the moronic referee do--blows up after the midfielder gets free, calls the ball back, books the Down player allowing all the Down players to get back behind the ball & then plays on with 9 seconds left!!

What was the point in calling back the play at that stage to book the player & wasting that time that Donegal badly needed
Ladies games are independantly timed & the game ended on the sound of the hooter
However the referee controls time on\time off & also theres such a simple thing called a watch

No gripes with the Down victory as their forwards were very good & kicked some lovely long range points but we had a chance as their backs weren't infallible

    Reported.

A bit of common sense from the referee there could have brought about a completely different result, IMO a clear advantage like the one described should be played on, and the formalities dealt with when the ball goes out of play. A good referee should have no bearing whatsoever on the result and should strive to create a free-flowing game.

If you do not give a toss then do not bother replying, this forum is for all things GAA. This is borderline trolling, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt this time but continue to post like this and you will not last to long around here.

Alright, now I know where I stand.

Just for the record, curry-muff's reply doesn't offend me in the slightest, mind you he/she is probably right. :)

in all fiarness, i think blaming the ref here is a bit much! rules are rules and there is no advantage rule in GAA. and also, there is no guarantee the point would have been kicked.

i have a relation on the donegal team by the way.

    Taken from the
Playing Rules of Ladies Gaelic Football 2007

    1. The Advantage Rule applies in Ladies Gaelic Football.
However it is not a licence to let fouls go unpunished.
Disciplinary action as warranted may be applied to the
offender after playing the Advantage Rule

    2. The Advantage Rule should be applied when the player in
possession of the ball is Free and Capable of taking the
Advantage ie. The Advantage has to be obvious.

As far as I know there is no advantage rule in any of the GAA games but granted a bit of common sense does go a long way.

I suppose this episode could conceivably bring up the issue of time keeping yet again.I think it should be the referee that looks after the time keeping. When I referee,I will add time on for instances that merit it.A few seconds added on to the time if a goalkeeper lazily goes to collect the ball that is out of play,a few seconds for a substitute coming on etc.Only the referee should have the responsibility as the game is for the referee to take charge.

As for the booking of the Down player,I didn't see the foul but if the ref thought it was merited, the referee was well within his rights to book the player who fouled. There is no such thing as the advantage rule.Whether or not advantage is played is up to the discretion of the referee.9 times out of 10 I would call a free especially close to goal and get in position to see it go over the bar.

I'd love to be able to see the incident again and make a proper judgement on it.Although there is no advantage rule,it could be used for or against you when being assessed.More often than not, you'd be credited with playing advantage rather than be criticised for playing advantage but if the ref wants to hold it up especially around the 20m and 13m lines,he is well within his rights.

One particular instance there a few weeks ago,I was refereeing a game and a forward got fouled outside the 13m line.I blew for the foul while the defender looked at me to wonder why I gave the free in.He had pulled down the forward to the ground while the forward had caught the ball.Said forward gets up with the ball in his hands and drives it past the goalkeeper who dives for it.Goal is given and there is no complaints.
Its all 50/50 but I'd like to see if the foul being mentioned was a bookable offense.
