This may seem like a stupid question, but I cannot seem to find the answer to it anywhere...
If a persons Job Seekers Benefit payment becomes available for collection in the post office on a Wednesday, do you HAVE to pick it up on Wednesday? Or can you pick it up the next day without hassle?

    Cheers,
    Fi

The general consensus on this board is that it is available for 3 days.

However, as with all advice on this board, it should be taken with a grain of salt and checking with the post office yourself would be a great idea.

I never even thought of checking with the post office! ha
Will give them a buzz in the morn.

it is usually held until the end of the week either friday or saturday when any uncollected payments are returned but some smaller post offices may do returns on a daily basis. also if you get a letter stating your payment is available every wednesday it will usually be there from tuesday

Yeah because a good Social Welfare system allows for holidays to be taken by people signing on. These handouts need to be reduced.

Cheers for the replies guys. The only reason I may be a day late this one time is because I have some temp part time work on, which the Social Welfare office know about.
Yeah because a good Social Welfare system allows for holidays to be taken by people signing on. These handouts need to be reduced.

I understand that the system has it's flaws, but why shouldn't someone be allowed to take a holiday?
Personally I won't this year as I would rather save what I can, but what about those who are good with the money they receive? So what if they decide to put some aside for a small holiday? How is it anyones business but theirs?
And what about those who were unfortunate enough to lose their jobs this year AFTER booking a holiday? Should they have to give up a holiday they have already paid for, just because people like you judge them for it?

And handout? I think not. Personally, I have paid tax prsi etc etc for 10 years now. I have more than EARNED what I am ENTITLED to at the moment. If I had any other choice, I would be working, not claiming.

There is a big difference between the scroungers and the honest people claiming because they have to. Don't lump us all in the same boat.

these benefits are not handouts, if you have contributed, why shouldnt you claim, and receive a fair payment, its not as if we live it up on the scratch, our politicians have no qualms taking pensions while they still work.

the idea that Irish people on the whole are free loading as you seem to suggest, disgusts me, i am currently in receipt of ub, and believe me i worked an average of 80 hours per week

Can you collect your payment a day early if you are going to be away for the day of payment and the following 3 days.

I have a friend who has this situation coming up, they won't be working but have to visit family due to fragility of their last grandparent's health and can't get travel dates that work with collection days, they plan to go home for a week.

Is there some kind of holiday allowance for those on jobseekers benefit and if so how many days a year?

You're allowed two weeks' holiday per year - you must apply at the social welfare office prior to leaving.
