Does anyone know if you need to display L-Plates on a van?

    Yes!

I think you may be under the impression that a van is a works vehicle but what is meant by the term works vehicle that applies to a class "W" driving license is an agricultural tractor, a fork lift or a JCB etc ;)

Yes you do, they come under the same regulations as a car. If you don't have L plates on the van when you come to do your test, you will not be taken out.

The only vehicles driven by learners which are exempt from displaying L plates are motorcycles and works vehicles. (In the case of motorcycles - the rider must display the L plate on their back.)

In all other categories, the display of L plates is mandatory.

What makes it a work vehicle? The van is owned by a company but I'm insured on it.

It's still not a class "W" works vehicle tough, another way you can tell which type of vehicles fit into this category is if they can be run on "marked diesel oil" (green diesel) then they're classed as "work vehicles" ;)

Examples would be land tractors, back hoe loaders, front loaders, 360 degree excavators, dumpers, teleporters, road rollers, road planers, ride-on lawn mowers, combine harvesters, self propelled crop sprayers, self propelled crop harvesters and countless other agricultural/construction and forestry machinery.
