didnt think they were selling for that.
They are build with more modern interior from a polo I think. Not sure about the actual running gear whether its original or based on polo too

because of this and also this

but only if the car falls into the co2 regime stated in the sellers ad. dont know the co2 figures off the top of my head.
edit - unkle has found that the car should be in the higher bracket of 170g/co2/km so 600e road tax or there abouts.

    From the ad:
one of only two in ireland

That's definitely false. I've seen a good few SA Citi Golf's in this country. I'd say more like 6 - 7 of them.

well i wouldnt hold that against the seller, there certainly is only a very small handfull of them here. cool retro car but as posted before, wouldnt be great if you had a smack in it i would imagine.

I think it's a great buy tbh, for a "new" car for 7k euros.

In many ways, it probably is! I mean at 7K€, it cant exactly depreciate heavily and you can be sure that they're will always be people who think its cool and buy it in a couple of years

Just something i was wondering about, see here. All the 1.4 citigolfs have CO2 emissions of between 170 and 180g/km. Surely that means 600€ annual road tax? A considerably harder figure to swallow than the price of the car

OOoooof, that'd certainly kill it for me

How come the ad says 135 though?

Because the seller is deceiving lying. The tax for any '09 car with CO2 emissions of between 170g/km and 190g/km is €630.

And why would the seller lie? My scam alertOmeter is off the scales...

:D haha, you reckon this ad is a scam or just a bit of a lie to shift it quicker?

i'd say its just a little white lie, but the thing is if i was buying it and the seller lied about this little thing i'd be worried about what else so would end up walking away.

Its just someone chancing there arm, looking for a gullible buyer.
There are plenty of other sellers on Carzone/Donedeal/CBG/.. doing something similar.

One of the reason the emissions for this car is so high is that the Golf probably hasnt got a catalytic converter.

Most cars which are targeted at developing countries are usually manufactured as cheeply as possible to keep the overall cost down as well as non existant emissions laws some thing to beware of when looking at this particular car...

Can the owner not decide between the old tax system and the new one?
old being approx 340 per year to tax for a 1.4 ?

    Still a cheap car,
    Hmm.
My son looking for a golf and loves retro's :P

The interior is out of a Fabia.

I'd like to get one and do it up like a Mk1 GTI.

I think the engine is developed to run on lower octane petrol than modern cars in Europe. Might that explain the CO2 output?

I wonder how easy it is to go to SA and pick one up yourself and get it shipped back. This seller is obviously applying a nice margin for himself.

its a cheap price considering the cheapest one in s africa is 7,600 before vrt etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Nforce

It'd probably benefit from some undersealant/waxoyl too due to our wonderful climate. I wonder what braking system is fitted....ie is it a completely redesigned system.......or the downright sh!te/dangerous system as found in the original Mk1.:D

What, you couldn't put in a radio yourself?

If it's under the new emissions based system (which it is!) the road tax is E1,050 per year. (196g/km)

Probably not worth it in that case!:)

They're not a GTI, therefore they're a bit pointless. wvwn the 1.6 VeloCITI model doesn't stack up against the original GTI.

I passed out a 09 D Citi Golf a while back and it had a beesting aerial so it must have a radio. However, I thought that cars that dont have catalytic converters cannot be sold in the EU,. true or false?

Spot on. The cheapest base model without any options (so without even a radio) is ZAR 83900. At a rate of about 0.09 to the Euro that's a bit over €7.5k

Plus transport costs. Plus 21.5% VAT over the the €7.5 + transport costs. Plus import duty (10% ??). And then VRT at 28% (band E) with the base calculated on whatever the car is considered to be worth here - not in SA. Let's keep it conservative at €12k, so VRT alone is about €3.4k. Add it all up and you'll end up with the same '09 Golf for near enough twice the asking price.

So it is either a scam or it could well be that someone has just imported one but now desperately needs the cash and is trying to sell at an enormous loss :(

I talked to the guy who owns the black one in Malahide. Hes a saffa and had it imported.

He said that the base model had NOTHING on it. You were lucky to get 4 wheels and a frame. You buy it at base and then decide what you want on it. Everything from bodykit to power windows etc. The total cost for him to have it Ireland was about €14k. If you are ever out the Malahide way, you'll know where its parked most days.
