Drivers?

Sorry if I'm posting in the completely wrong forum for this but I honestly have no idea where to post this.

Anyway I've got Skype and I just bought a new Skype headset but I keep getting an error message anytime I go to make a call saying that there's a problem with my microphone.

I checked various websites and FAQ's but couldn't find anything.

Anytime I plug the jack into it's correct area on my laptop a 'Sigmatel' box comes up to say what exactly has been plugged in so I always choose 'Mic' and then get a little purple bar under that.

I went onto the sigmatel website to see if there was any way I could update my drivers for my microphone to work but I kept getting options to pay for updating drivers which I don't want to do.

Could anyone help me please? I've honestly no idea what's going on. It may not be my drivers at all but any help or guidance is much appreciated.
