O2 Broadband Contract - How to Get Out

Signed up for O2 broadband (7.2MBps) in June. Have the Huawei modem that attaches via USB cable. Thought it would be decent but it's very slow at times (especially during peak times). Have no tv here at home and like to watch streaming sport but it keeps buffering which is very frustrating.

The contract is for 18 months. Went to the O2 shop during the week and asked if there was any way I could cancel the contract but the only way is the pay for the remainder of it (it's 20 euro/month so 17 x €20=€340.

Used to have NTL in another house and that had great speed. Anyone ever cancelled their contract before with O2 without having to pay the remainder of it?

    God bless,

    Phil.

Unless you can demonstrate that O2 are failing to provide you with a proper service you havent a hope of getting out of your contract.

You cannot compare what o2 offer with what Ntl/upc offer as they are worlds apart in terms of their capabilities.

I have a friend who took O2 to the Small Claims Court over misleading advertising. They advertise speeds of up to 7.2mbps. And as we both know, you get nowhere near that, so the advertising is quite misleading (it's like Esso saying you'll get up to one litre of petrol for 114c - far too vague). The vagueness of the "up to" saved their asses in that the claim wasn't upheld. But simply because he brought them to the Small Claims over it, they were very happy to terminate the contract at no extra cost. Small Claims cost only €15 too and you don't go to court. It's all done in the post. Best 15 quid ever spent if you ask me. O2 are just a big shower of crooks.

As much as I dislike Chorus for their TV service, their broadband is spot on. Puts O2 to shame and leaves eircom blushing a little bit as well.

Not O2, but I have one single bar - usually - of Vodafone mobile broadband. The dongle is hanging out the window via an extra-long USB cable to catch a stronger connection.

Does that count, if I went in to cancel my contract? Also thinking of UPC broadband, at 20MB. Would you recommend? What's streaming videos and live feeds like?

My Daughter has UPC. Real Broadband.

You don't have to take TV on the cable, that's optional. They have a dish and the free satellite channels for TV.

The broadband goes through a dish, or a cable?

What does it mean by cables anyway, is it via the telephone line?

Like I say, the "up to" clause will probably always save their asses if you even question them about the service they are providing you. But try them anyway cos I've never met anyone who gets anywhere near the "up to" figure. It's completely misleading. If they are unsatisfactory, go the Small Claims route shouting misleading advertising, push for a refund of all payments made for the service. You haven't a chance of getting that (and it's unlikely the claim will be upheld because of the "up to" thingy), but as a middle ground, they'll probably terminate the contract cos they'll be so sick of you at that stage.

I know there's a recessh and all that, but it's well worth €15 to give a good go at escaping the b****rds' evil claws.

Btw, Chorus internet simply rocks. It's like the connection you'd expect if you were working at Google HQ or something. You will wait for nothing. No pausing YouTube waiting for it to load etc. Everything is instant. I don't work for them, I'm not on commission or anything. I actually think they're a crap company at everything else. But they can do Internet better than anyone in the whole country. TV cable/Phone line connection depends on where you live. You can freephone 1908 and give them your address and they'll tell you if they can connect you and whether it will need to be via TV cable or phone line.

7 day cooling off period with O2, I think (I should really know, working for them) it extends to contracts. Will double check in the morning.

If there is, sorry OP no excuse. ;)

And indeed the cooling off period does apply to contracts.
