    Hi All,

I recently received a newletter from a politian in my area that mentioned 2500 places for part time college courses being made available for people unemployed for more than 6mths, the article said there would be "more details in coming weeks" - so wasn't too big on details.

Anyone else out there know a bit more about the specifics? sounds promising though :o

No details still available, apparently they will be 1,500 part-time courses offered at various IT & Unis around the country.
The Government is announcing the details of 1,500 free part-time undergraduate college places for unemployed people. They will be in the science, business, engineering and technology sectors. Thirteen institutes of technology, four universities and the National College of Ireland will take part in the scheme which aims to up-skill people who find themselves out of work. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0726/breaking23.htm

just out of a matter of interest is there any criteria for those applying for these courses. I have an MSc and would be very very very interested in completing a different degree again cause as it is i'm over 2 years out of work (a year for my masters and a year looking for work) and im not even getting interviews at this stage.....I would love to attend college again and get my ass off the couch!!!

In Ireland you only get one "free" degree and therefore if i was to apply to go back to college i would have to pay full fees (around 7 grand a year) sooooooo i'm wondering can i apply.....i'm on JSB for 10 months now......and get another degree for free???? or am i just being selfish!!!

Im looking forward to when they announce the post grad stuff in the next few days. Its all a bit vague though about the finer details, what happens when there is more demand than places for instance?

Would be nice to get back to college part time alright.

Just sent an email to UL about the courses they announced that would be part of the program, there are some interesting courses on the list. They have a link for postgrad courses but there is none to be selected there at the moment, just enquired about the requirements to qualify for these courses.....do you need the min leaving cert requirements, not allowed have a previous degree, be over 23, out of college for how many year?

i have a feeling its not going to be as easy as expected to get into one of these courses......i have a feeling its for the likes of people over 40 who are going to find it hard to compete with the 20 somethings coming out of college now and they just want to give them an option for a few years until the economy gets on its feet again.................

If i get anymore info i will post.................

Anyone got some information on this, and how I go about applying for a course. What I mean is do you need to contact your local fas office for this type of course or apply direct to the college in question.
