I live in Balbriggan and am thinking of getting Sky or NTL (I'm currently connected to a provider organised by a Management Company). All I want is the basic channels incluiding Sky News. Can anyone advise? Also approx how high is the NTL aerial?

    Thanks

take a look at their web pages, i think ntl is upc
you'll have to check if ntl/chorus is available in your area, if it is the tv, broadband and phone bundle could be an option
there's probably no point in getting sky if you're not going to get plus/hd and I dont think it's available with a basic package, they dont do broadband/phone yet, hopefully soon though
    sky is better than ntl
check out the houses around you if you want to get an idea of what the receivers look like, probably shouldn't stare for too long though

Balriggan also known as the 'town of the hills' - live in Clonard Court and we've had NTL out twice in the past 6 years and they popped up on the roof eachtime but couldn't get a signal from the tramsmitter in The Nual - don't know if it's out location adjacent to the Industrial Est next door or what! Maybe the newer houses north of the town have a better signal!!

As for SKY News = paaah....more than happy with the 8 terestial stations ;)

you'll also have to check the T&C's of your management company agreement - a lot of them don't let you erect additional ariels or dishes - my sister tried to change from one provider to another, on the day the guys were installing the ariel, someone from the management co rocked up and told them to stop that is it not allowed! so she had to cancel the order and is forced to stay with her current provider. She might have gotten away with it if the ariel could have been put in a place on the house where they wouldn't see, but it has to go on the side of the house and up quite high, so no chance of hiding it!

check before you det it installed - they won't care that you have had it installed and signed a contract - some management cos will insist you remove it.

I have basic sky package with the entertainment pack (€20.50 per month), with two add on options of the discovery channel and news channels (€2 extra each) so its only €24.50 p/mth. Sky def do offer a basic package, and a lot of the time they offer free box, dish and installation, or else its free box and dish, you pay for installation, but get 3 mths half price etc. There is always some introductory offer available.

If you are allowed an external Aerial or Dish then get SKY as the quality of the service is much higher than that offered by UPC(ntl).

You get many more channels and an interactive service with there basic package.

I definitely agree Sky is much better, if you can go for the sky plus box rather than the basic box

Moved to Satellite from Dublin County North - more of a general Satellite service issue than a DCN-specific issue.

OP - Please read the Satellite forum charter here.

Satellite mods - If not suited feel free to bounce back.

Or you can use aerial for 4 basic Irish channels and Freesat/FTA satellite receiver + dish for all the main UK channels free (about 40 decent TV and 20 decent radio out of 300+ free TV/Radio).

The Humax DVR is best Freesat box.

Sky+ is OK if you want PayTV. The receiver but not record/playback works on free channels if you cancel.

    thanks, but it seems unfair.

Unfair? ........ because Sky don't want it?

You could always ask them to include it in their package I suppose ...... good luck with that ;)
